m=. Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 10,1995 -- 5 A. Well travelled singer lands in Port Perry Rick Washbrook is a busy guy these days. Along with his own performing career that has taken him from clubs on the Alaska Highway to Caribbean cruise ships, the Pickering song writer and singer is producing an album of childrens songs for a friend and is turning out his own line of designer shirts. Washbrook was in Port Perry last Thursday evening for a gig at Trader Sam's Restaurant and he'll be back again at Sam's on January 21. He describes his music this way: "lots of fun, uptempo Rock Blues and Rockabilly, fifties songs and of course my originals. My sound is a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones and Stray Cats." The 36-year old has been around the music bis since the 1970's, and perhaps his best moment ever came when his song "Rescued From the Arnis of Love" was recorded by the well known Canadian group Glass Tiger, and Washbrook who co- wrote the piece with two others, received a 1992 award from SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers) as one of the most played songs on radio stations. Ironically, "Rescued" almost didn't make it on the Glass Tiger album and was the third single released: Suddenly when it went number three in Canada, more than a few people in the music industry sat up and took notice. A song had to be played on radio in Canada at least 100,000 times to qualify for the award. Though he has played gigs in Alaska, the Yukon, all over northern Ontario and on those cruise ships in Caribbean, Washbrook has been staying a bit closer to home the last Pickering singer/songwriter Rick Washbrook has performed from Alaska to the Caribbean, and he'll be at Trader Sam's January 21.
