Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 18, 1995 -- 5 A Hockey takes Cory to 'southern states When Cory Bricknell started the hockey season last fall, the last place he thought he'd end the season was in the southern United States. But when things didn't work out with: Niagara Falls Thunder of the OHL, the 19-year old Port Perry native hopped on a plane and two days later suited up in the uniform of the Huntington (West Virginia) Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) . It proved to be a good move for the young defenseman who saw lots of action in the team's remaining 35 games where he Thanks, Brendan' Operation Scugog held its annual Easter campaign for the Food Bank last weekend, and people of all ages turned up at the Fire Stations In Port Perry and Caesarea to make donations of food. One of them was three year old Brendan Pearce, who arrived with Mom and agreed to have his photo taken. Accepting the donation from little Brendan Is Barb Carnegle, one of the many volunteers working for the Food Bank that weekend. Organizers say the Easter campaign was a success In keeping the"Food Bank shelves well stocked. . The number of Scugog residents using the Food Bank Is up over last year. Independent Optician SVR 'AZAN I BA CORO BN 04 1 EN 2 Year Frame Warranty & Antl-Scratch Wendy Rey (R00) 24 I id BY C9 LQ collected eight assists and put 136 penalty minutes into the book as well. In an interview with the - Citizen last week he described the calibre of play in the ECHL as a step quicker than major junior and tougher. At 19 (he turns 20 this October) Bricknell was the youngest player in the ECHL and said it took him several games to adjust to the differences. His assignment with the Blizzard initially was to be temporary to fill in for an injured player, but the coaches liked what they saw and he was in uniform until the team went out in the first round of post- season play after catching the final playoff spot. Not only did Bricknell enjoy his time on the ice with the Blizzard, he found playing hockey in the southern States an interesting experience. The fens are'not nearly as well versed in the finer points of the game as they are in Canada and during games the PA announcer would describe why a whistle stopped the play. "They were always cheering us," he said, and when players went into the community, the fans were always asking questions about the game. The arena in Huntington seats 8,000 people and usually drew about 7,000 fans each game. One interesting experience was playing in Charleston against the Chiefs in the arena where the famed movie Slap Shot was filmed. . Bricknell began last season with the Thunder, but when that club was purchased by Sherry Bassin, management opted to go with younger players and Bricknell was given the option of being traded to another Junior club or go to a minor pro team. He quickly decided on the latter and with help from the Thunder and his agent, he landed in Huntington. The club covered his room and board and paid him $300 (US) a week salary plus bonuses. As for the future, Bricknell said he may return to ile EYE EXAMINATIONS ARRANGED 985-938 Huntington (he's on the protected list) or take a try-out with a team in the IHL or the AHL. He ha® given himself three yeara to see if he can catch at the pro level. If it doesn't work, "I guess I'll have to hang 'em up," he said. Over the summer months he's stay in shape helping out the coaches of the AAA Central Ontario Atom Wolves in Lindsay and will do some teaching at the Can-Am Hockey School in Guelph, The hockey career of 19 year old Cory Bricknell started In Niagara Falls last fall and ended this spring In Huntington, West Virginia. He sald playing hockey In the southern states was an Interesting experience.
