This is an optimistic time which / LETTERS TO THE EDITOR McDonald's welcomed To The Editor, Council Members and Residents of With regard to the recent newspaper coverage at last week's Council meeting on the voiced objections to the "Golden Arches" coming to Port Perry, please consider the following points: - a McDonald's in Port Perry would provide employment for local persons, especially our youth; - McDonald's are known for their support of hospitals and the community, i.e. Ronald McDonald House, Hospital Day, etc.; - Location in Port Perry would deter our youth from travelling, especially in extreme weather conditions and late at night, and keep the local youths closer to home; this has to be a parental concern of gany in the community; 4 - Kids love to have their 'birthdays' at McDonalds; CA TIN where else can this be accommodated in Port Perry at the present? - Any establishment that serves food could be regarded as a potential place for vermin, but surely the Department of Health regulations would not allow an unsafe, unclean environment, at a McDonald's or any other establishment. Is that really the general opinion regarding such food establishments? If so, and judging by the existing numbers of food places in Port Perry, there must already be quite a few rats! - Traffic is evident at any corner in Port Perry, and indeed, any where in the world! It is the way of life. - Port Perry is not a "sleepy, little town" but is a growing, progressive suburban area; The Businesses, Council, Service clubs and residents work hard to improve our image and public relations. If people moved here to escape growth, perhaps it was not a good move. Port Perry is not standing still, nor do we want it to. ! - Have you ever experienced an unclean McDonald's; even the washrooms? - - What is the difference of turning into the Mac's store, Halibut House, the Country Style, the XL, etc.? The setting for "convenience" has already been precedent in this area iy the location of these "fast" convenience locations - so why not a McDonalds? It seems most appropriate. What is » difference from a McDonalds these places? - A traffic study would no doubt show that the corner of 7A and Simcoe Street is already highly utilized. Isn't that why we have a traffic light? Give the planning people some credibility. - It is understood that McDonald's will conform to the architectural presentation of their locations, e.g. the Picton location. However, this location would not deem it necessary to do so in this instance, since the "neighbours" have a "convenience" store look and display their own particular logos. - 'Where does all this negativity come from? Local residents democratically select the 18kal Municipal Council and should then trust them to make the appropriate decisions for the good of the majority. Let them make their decisions. It seems every item becomes an issue. If you are not in agreement with the decision, elect different representation. Democracy at work! - Council should perhaps take note that although there were up to 100 persons voicing negative opinions on this issue, the remainder of the electorate were obviously positive. Once again, the silent majority is overshadowed by these loud N.IMB.Y.s! -Let's Progress - Not Protest! A new century is looming. M. HosKin, Port Perry, Ont.
