Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 25, 1995p-- 3 a Council steps in to nasty baseball feud Scugog council has jumped reluctantly into a nasty dispute between two minor baseball leagues. Councillors want a face to face meeting between reps of Cartwright Minor Softball and Nestleton Hardball League in an effort to sort out their problems, including diamond times. "We (the Township) will arrange this meeting," said a perplexed Mayor Howard Hall Monday afternoon to Rik Davie and Dale McClurg of the Nestleton League. They were in the council chambers to complain that Cartwright Minor Softball and the Nestleton Hall Board has allocated diamond times for their league only on Friday nights or weekends. The Nestleton Hardball League was formed over the winter, by parents, coaches and umpires who had been with Cartwright Minor Softball in previous years. There has been considerable friction between the two groups ever since. Mr. Davie called it a "spirit of ill will since our formation," when he addressed councillors on Menday. He and the Nestelton executive are upset that they have not been allocated diamond time from Monday to Thursday evenings. "We know there are less teams with Cartwright Minor Ball this year than last year. That tells us there must be open diamond time (during the week) he told councillors. He said Néstleton Hardball with six teams (about 50 registrants) ready to play this season, is willing to let an outside arbitrator settle the dispute over diamond times. Members of council were clearly annoyed this on-going dispute between the two groups had reached the council chambers. New chief in May Scugog residents should know about mid-May who will be their next fire chief. Township Mayor Howard Hall said last week the fire committee has interviewed four applicants for the job and is scheduled to re- interview two of those candidates thig week. He said the committee is aiming to make its decision on the new chief by the middle of May. The part time chief's position which pays a salary of about $17,000 annually became vacant at the end of March with the sudden resignation of Don Steele. Richard Miller has been appointed acting chief until the position is filled and Bill Harrison is acting deputy for the same period. Both Harrison and Miller have applied for the chief's position. "Council should not have to try to find a solution to this problem," said Ward 1 rep Doug Moffatt. Regional councillor Marilyn Pearce, who is chair of the Township's parks and rec committee, told the delegation the problem is both groups wanting diamond time from Monday through Thursday. "You will have to start using the diamonds Friday (nights) and on the weekends. If that (weekend play) puts a few parents out, (Scugog) don't have enough (baseball) facilities for just Monday-Thursday play. And we don't have the money to build new ones," she said. Davie said Nestleton Hardball is willing to play Friday nights and weekends, if there is no diamond time available during the week. But he is not convinced that's the case. "We are willing to ride the back of the bus, but we don't know if the bus is full," he said. Councillor Pearce reminded him that Nestleton Hardball just too bad. We got on the bus, as this is the first season of play. She also suggested Nestleton Hardball put some money into up-grading a diamond at the Cartwright Public School to make it suitable for hardball on weekends. Mr. Desvie agreed the association could assist in the up-grade for hardball. Cartwright Minor Softball president Dale Newman could not be reached Monday night for comment. However, the Citizen was told he would be more than willing to meet with reps from Nestleton Hardball to try to iron out differences.
