Financial security openly Voices from the pulpits To the Editor: There was a time when communities could expect clergy to provide public moral guidance. Though their voice was not always welcomed, and certainly not always heeded, the community would have no question where its pastors stood on moral issues of the day. Whether or not the people liked what they heard, pastors would declare their understanding of the biblical view of a public issue. It was understood and expected, that the pastor was God's spokesman. But that is just the problem-- there was a time, but it appears that time has long since passed. As evidence that the pulpits have grown silent, consider the following. A Cause for celebration? Letus send | FLOWERS , or your decoration! T Floral & Gift Shop 209 MARY ST., PORT PERRY (across from LCBO) 985-9360 ee How does your pastor (if you have one) feel about casinos, abortion on demand, euthanasia, care for the sick and the elderly, the crass greed and materialism of our society (as evidenced by the obscene salaries of professional athletes and many CEOs while educators and health practitioners take "Rae Days" to help keep the public purse under control) dishonesty in public discourse, same sex relationships, health education in our public schools, student welfare? t+ And should you know what your pastor feels, do you have any idea wimt the pastor down the street feels? These are but a few of the moral issues being discussed in the public forum, but absent from the discussion are the very people called to provide moral, and spiritual leadership to the community. It appears that pastors have become religious politicians, * carefully weighing each public utterance for its potential to offend or placate, first their own congregations and secondly the public at large. Since it appears that the ultimate drive is to swell the gg numbers attending weekly * 4 ' worship services, there is a studied attempt to offend as few as possible. The answered question may well be "is God offended with what is or is not being said?" The pulpit is not a place for a belligerent harangue, but it is a place to fearlessly declare the ge of moral right. as defined by the Bible. While the Scriptures exhort the servant of God to be gentle, those same Seripuites oauive pastors to speak God's Message to people; a message that sometimes bs one's comfort zone. I believe it is time to bring the Bible bick to the public square. I believe it is the duty of the clergy to lead the way. Rev. David S. Daniels, Port Perry Baptist Church Port Perry, Ont.
