wm 16-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 3, 1995 Ward 2 hopefuls against fast food rezoning The five candidates in the Ward 2 by-election May 23 are iving a cold shoulder to a posed re-zoning for a fast food outlet on the southwest corner of Highway 7A and Simcoe Street. All five told the Citizen they would oppose the re-zoning if elected, citing traffic congestion and an intrusion of commercial -- =z mses ifto a residential neighbourhood. Residents who live in the area have vowed to fight the re-zoning should it be approved by council. Jim Grosvenor, Elgin Knopp, Jeff Brown, Ken Carruthers and Ruth Mark filed registration papers with the Township prior to the deadline last week. A long time resident of Scugog, he's retired from the East York Fire Department and has been active in many community organizations imgluding the League. Scugog Mens Hockey Mr. Grosvenor said his decision to run in the by-election was based mainly on the support he received last November. Elgin Knopp has lived in Port Perry. for almost 20 years, He spent many years as a director with the Chamber of Commerce, ahd as chairman of the Chamber's Festival Days each summer. . He told the Citizen his decision to seek election is to his Jeff Brown, 24, has been a regular observer at council meetings for several months and said his decision to run in the by- election is based on a life-long interest in local affdirs and politics. He wants the Township to move ahead with a second ice pad and swimming pool at Scugog Centre and feels the Township, should be doing more for young people in the 16-25 age group. A drop-in centre and allowing dances at the Latcham Centre are two possibilities that should be explored, he said. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Port Perry High School and George Brown College where he leted his course in food and work in the community. And, he said, since selling his Rent and Save business, he now has the time and flexibility to devote counci}, affairs. He is now employed in sales and sales management with Gus Brown Marine in Whitby. Mr. Knopp said a major priority for Ward 2 is getting the sewer system up-graded to handle proposed new development in the area between Port Perry and Prince Albert. He pledged to work for the business community in the ward. , "We have to make sure the (business) core remains solid," he said. Mr. Knopp lives on Simcoe Street with his wife and two children. beverage management. Ken Carruthers is no stranger to the Scugog council chambers. He completed a term as Ward 1 rep. He told the Citizen he feels the council more than ever needs experienced representation. Mr. Carruthers predicts intense preasure in the ward is coming with residential and commercial developments. He noted his background in community ogganizations and said even when he lost his Ward 1 seat last November, he volunteered to work on the Arena Board and the Library Board. He is also a member of the Township's Economic Development Committee. He also feels the Canterbury Commons developers should be forced to stay with the original plan that included a nine-hole golf course. After over-coming some serious health problems last year, he declared himself "feeling tremendous" and said his doctors have given him the green light to "take another run at politics. Ruth Mark has lived in Port Perry for 50 years and said she is "committed to being a full time councillor for ward 2." She pledged to "be accessible and listen $o the views of the (residents) of the ward and put their interests first." Stating she is an advocate of fiscal responsibilit and accountability, she" would identify community needs and proceed with responsible fund raising and expenditures in accordance with the financial ability of the community. She believes the Township should be working to encourage tourism through the expansion of tourism facilities and services. Mrs. Mark operated a business in Scugog for 20 years. She and her husband raised a family here and" now have three grandchildren. Ward 2 takes in Port Perry (south of Queen Street) Prince Albert and rural areas south of that hamlet. Voters will cast their ballots at the Municipal office on May 23 with polls open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The by-election became necessary after Ward 2 councillor Marilyn Pearce was named to the Regional seat on the Township council.
