Daniels Canadians were shocked in early April. The savage beating death of an elderly Anglican priest and his wife in their Montreal home was followed a few days later by the senseless shooting of an Edmonton cab driver, whose car subsequently slammed $nto an oncoming vehicle killing a 58 year-old grandmother. The unbelievable thing about these pointless killings is that they were committed by boys between the ages of thirteen and fifteen. | As the public absorbed the news, predictable rage began surfacing leading thousands of Canadians to petition Ottawa for changes to the Young Offenders Act, saying it is far too lenient on youth committing such heinous crimes. Youth crime is rising at an alarming rate. Since 1986 the rate of violent crime among teens has grown 117% --- twice as fast as the adult rate. How should we respond to this growing crisis? Many call for tougher sentencing of young offenders. While I agree violent offenders need restraining, I am not sure lengthening sentences will solve the problem. For years we have witnessed the steady erosion of family stability. Whether by choice or by necessity, both mom and dad have left the home for the workplace, leaving children increasingly on their own. Faced with the ever-increasing pressures of maintaining their place in the workforce, many parents have neglected investing the time needed to install proper values and morals in the lives of their children. In the busy schedules of families constantly on the go, Sunday School, Catechism, and Sunday Church attendance has been steadily squeezed out. Popular culture, as evidenced by magezines, paperbacks, music, television, and movies has become the main teacher of moral values with its glamor- ization of violence, ridicule of religious values, disparagement of marriage and family, and promotion of sexual promiscuity. Under the guise of tolerance, moral absolutes have been replaced by relativism. But the problem with relativism is that everything is right and everything is wrong, depending This Sunday, June 4th at 1:30 the Scugog Chapter of the Oakridge Trail Assoc. will meet to hike through Durham Forest. We will gather at the Junior on how you look at it. As our society continues to move away from biblical principles, we can expect to see growing societal disintegration. The sages of ancient Israel observed: "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law" (Proverbs 29:18 - NIV). The message is straight- forward: Where God's truth (revelation) is unknown, people run wild because they have no standard by which to measure their actions. However, where God's law is honoured and kept, there is blessing. Perhaps it's time to dust off that old family Bible because, as parents, submitting ourselves to the teaching of Scripture, and praying that our children will follow our example, will be our greatest contribution to Canada.
