Epiroriat] 4 | Solving one issue creates a problem at local high school Nobody can really quibble with a Durham Board of Education ban on smoking on school property. But at Port Perry High School, it seems this ban may be creating other problems. We are told some students are refusing to park in the school lot because they can't sit in their vehicles and smoke. Instead they are parking on streets around the high school, adding to an already very difficult situation for residents who live on those streets and have long complained about the congestion. The Township is getting ready to ticket vehicles parked on streets around the high school. Thé Township has also asked the Board of Education to provide more parking on school property on MacDonald Street. Perhaps the Board should be re-considering its total ban on smoking. If students are going to smoke, why create new problems for residents who live near the school. A designated smoking area on school property is worth a realistic look. No time for UN to leave Bosnia The sight of a Canadian peacekeeper chained to a pole as a "human shield" in Bosnia fills most people with utter revulsion. That image of Captain Patrick Rechner was flashed around the world onto TV sets and newspaper front pages. - At least ten other Canadian peacekeepers are being held hostage by Serb for¢es in Bosnia, another 45 have been detained, and another 250 United Nations peacekeepers from other countries are in the same predicament. Using human shields in any conflict is a repulsive tactic, totally outside any "rules of war," if there can be such a thing. ,, Canadians have every right to be outraged by this "behavior, Writing in the Monday Toronto Sun, veteran internationalist columnist Matthew Fisher summed things up this way. "There is no peace to keep so there is no reason for the UN to continue taking abuse in the former Yugoslavia." He said the entire UN peacekeeping contingent should be yanked out of the Balkans now under cover from the Americans and the warring factions left to fight it out among themselves just as they have along ethnic and religious lines for centuries. Sounds simple--a quick solution in the face of a barbarous conflict that seems to get uglier by the day and with virtually no hope of a negotiated settlement. Yet, what about future UN peacekeeping in tough parts of the world. If the UN gives in to Serbian blackmail, it will be an open encouragement for the same tactics elsewhere. And can the UN really leave the warring factions in Bosnia alone to butcher and massacre at will? The atrocities with the UN in place have been well documented. Imagine | what would go on if the UN pulled out? Peacekeeping has:worked for the UN over the last 50 years. It's never easy and will never get any easier. But that's the price for trying. Canadian defense minister Collinette says the best choice is negotiation. He's right. Matthew Fisher may be expressing what's on the minds and in the hearts of countless Canadians. He's wrong. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR < Skating Club may fold for lack of support by parents Open letter to all parents of the "Port Perry Figure Skating Club's members. On Wedsesday, May 17, 1995 the Port Perry Figure Skating Club held its Annual General Meeting. The purpose of this meeting was to: a) review the financial statements for the 94- 95 season; b) receive recommendations from parents on the operation of the Club in whole; ¢) receive nominations for the formation of the 95-96 Executive; and d) to pick up children's photographs from their Carnival Night: Other than the Executive, one parent showed up for the meeting and one parent to pick up her photos and give regrets that she was unable to stay. J ' It saddens us (the outgoing executive), that 99% of our parents did not choose to attend our most important meeting of the year. Did you not wish to voice your opinion? This is your Club for your children. Or were you too busy, or simply forgot? We would like to think it was the latter. We cannot impress enough the importance of parent participation in a community service group. The Club will not operate without this participation. At one time or another, we all often hear complaints from parents about "keeping our children off the streets". Community service groups provide opportunities to help counteract this. But they do need support and fprticipation from the parents. Therefore, we are holding another Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 21, 1995 at 7:00-p.1. at the Arena. Please attend! We need your 'participation, however small, for the 95-96 season. Better yet, run for a position on the Executive. Many hands make lighter work, Let's have a club that the community of Port Perry can be proud of. We can accomplish this for our children. On a different note, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our children on their immensely successful Carnival Night. All their hard work sure paid off. Congratulations also go out to. our Precision Team, whom again took the Gold Medal in Tharnhill. It really is worth it. Please come and find out. Sincerely, The 94-95 Executive Port Perry Figure Skating Club J. Miller, Secretary Ward 2 candidate issues challénge To the Editor: To begin, I wish to congratulate Ken Carruthers on being chosen to represent the residents of Ward 2. I would like to thank Ken, Jim, Elgin, and Ruth for a good campaign. To all the people who helped with my campaign I extend my greatest gratitude. A special thank-you goes to my family who were very supportive and helpful during this whole adveriture. I turn now to the 90 people who voted for me. You believed in a fresh new face who could bring new ideas to council, and represent a constituency of younger people. I do not want to disappoint these people. Just because I did not get elected to council does not mean I can not bring my new ideas before the people who were elected. I will' endeavour to continue to attend council meetings and remain active in the running of this Township. I assure all my supporters I will try running again in November, 1997. I would like to issue a challenge to the 90 people who voted for me. I would like to see more of us 15-25 year olds inform council on how we see lifestyle changes and growth in this Township. An opinion of a young adult is just as valid as an opinion of a person who is twice that age. I look forward to my supporters, the young and young at heart, working together towards a better Scugog. Thank- you very much for the opportunity to express my concerns. Sincerely Yours, Jeffery W. Brown
