Lots of special events for 160th church anniversary by Heather McCrae 'The sound of bells, chimes and singing rang out of Columbus United Church on Sunday, June 4th as the congregation celebrated its 160th anniversary. Featured guests for the anniversary were the "Bells of St. Matthews" choir from Richmond Hill United Church. The congregation of Columbus Community United Church initially started its humble beginnings on "the fourth Sabbath of October 1835" when Rev. R.H. Thornton, the first resident Presbyterian minister in Ontario County, travelled from his Call in Whitby to the "Back Station", delivering his first Sacrament at the home of Mr. John Hepburn. The "Back Station" at that time included the area of Brooklin, Kedron, Columbus, Raglan and District. The church standing today in the tiny village was built in the Spring of 1873 at a cost of about $10,000. Since that time the stately building has been continually upgraded and plans have been made to embark on an expansion this year. In 1960, Columbus, Kedron and Raglan United Churches were associated as a Pastoral Charge, but Kedron separated six years later. Then, in 1986, the decision was made to close the Raglan 'church and that congregation joined in glass to become a part of the Columbus United Church. Since that time two beautiful stained windows have been dedicated in memory of the Raglan Church, It was a time for celebrations last Sunday as few congregations can attest they've served God for 160 years. . Speaking to his congregation Sunday morning, Rev. Jack Griffen said "the richest gift God can give us is our memory". "To relive past blessings is a wonderful gift God has given us" he said. "Today, let us remember those who gave us their spiritual heritage 160 years ago. We remember the heroes of the past who gave us the thoughts and ideas of the future" he told the filled church. In celebration of the church's 160th anniversary, many were dressed in period costume. At a time when the United Church has been the target of much negativity, the atmosphere on Sunday was every bit positive. Rev. Griffen said "we are giving to our children and our children's children. Maybe in another 160 years, they'll be in this church remembering us" he smiled. a As was the Methodist tradition years ago, the choir, dressed in Turn to page 16 City HEARING CENTRE Registered, Ministry of Health AD P PROFESSIONAL HEARING SERVICES including : = Audiometric Testing = Impedance Audiometry = Real Ear Measurement ww Flectronic Hearing Aid Analysis = Prescription and Fitting of Hearing Aids = All make Repairs and Service PORT PERRY B 462 Paxton Street LIL 1L9 LINDSAY M 4 Lindsay Street North K9V 1T4 (705) 328-0145 VAN CAMP & KELLER Chartered Accountants 204 CASIMIR STREET, PORT PERRY 985-9725 (905) 985-3166 Financial Accounting Income Tax Planning & Consulting Financial Planning & Projections Business Consulting CORPORATIONS - FARMS INDIVIDUALS - SMALL BUSINESS zs Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 6, 1995 -- 15 FIFTY Dud FES Nd.
