wy 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 6, 1995 a Fire Department hosts Extrication June 22-24 Scugog Township Fire Department will host the Central Ontario Region Extrication competitions coming June 22, 23 and 24 at the Scugog Arena. Scugog Fire Captain Dave Ballingall, who is serving as co- ordinator for this event said 18 teams are expected.for the competition from departments such as Burlington, Missassauga, Bradford, City of York, Uxbridge, Brock- Sunderland, Ajax, Whitby, Brighton N.Y., and Manvers- Pontypool, the recent winner of the Eastern Regionals. The winner of the event in Port Perry will qualify for the Internationals held this year in Captain Ballingall said because Scugog is the host this year, the department will not enter a team as most of the firefighters are involved in the major task of organization. So what is extrication? Captain Ballingall explained it is the removal of a person(s) from a place of entrapment, usually the result of a car accident. It has become a highly sophisticated part of the job of firefighters at accident scenes, and getting injured victims safely from the wreckage and on the way to hospital has been credited with saving countless lives. Secondly, the competitions allow departments to observe new techniques, "exchange notes and ideas," if you will. And finally, they give departments a chance to show the general public this important aspect of their work. Each five person team will compete in two scenarios timed at 20 minutes. In the "limited class," there are restrictions on the kinds of tools that can be used. In the "unlimited class," there are no such restrictions and heavy hydraulic tools such as the Jaws of Life are permitted. " Judges award points to the teams based on performance, and the team with most overall points is declared the winner. Captain Ballingall said Honda and General Motors are donating two vehicles for the competition, but more "wrecks" are needed. He said any donations of "wrecks" would be appreciated.
