If you answer correctly these two questions that were part of the 1995 Gauss Canadian Mathematics Competition, chances are you're right in line with 86 senior mathematicians from RH Cornish PS who recently rated tops in the Competition. Here's a question from the Grade Seven quiz. "Each of the 16 members of the Mathematics team is to receive 3 slices of pizza. What is the minimum number of eight-slice pizzas that must be ordered? Is it 5,6,7,8,or 9? And from the Grade 8 test, "the sum of three numbers is 180. The first number is 10 more than the average of the three numbers and the second number is 4 less than the average. What is the third number? Is it 54,60,126,70 or 56? Check the answers further down. These students, as well as RH Cornish PS, will be recognized at the Durham Math Awards on June 7 at Sinclair Secondary School. But it hasn't just been the Gauss Contest the students have excelled in. Last November, RH Cornish PS_was recognized as being the top school within the Durham Board after writing the American. Junior HS Mathematics Examination. And last February, the Grade Seven team placed second in the Region in the National Math League. Put out by the University of Windsor, the team placed 17 across Canada out of 681 competing 'schools and placed 6th in Ontario. Paul Nguyen ranked.an impressive second in Canada after placing 39 out of a possible 40! Also, in this Math League, the Grade 8 team finished first in Durham, placing 27th in Canada out of 597 competing schools. In the National Pascal Math competitions, held earlier this year, RH Cornish PS was the only elementary school competing in the secondary school competition. Out of 46 competing schools in Zone 68, these mathematicians ranked first in the Durham Board and Zone and also placed 17th in the province and 47th across Canada. In a competition put out by the American Scholastic Math Association, O'Neill CVI in Mr. Oshawa and RH Cornish were the only two schools competing. As expected, our public school won over the Oshawa High School. Math teacher, Reg Philip, is extremely pleased with the results his students have achieved. "It's a team effort" he told the Citizen, "that involves encouragement from the parents, students and teacher." And now for the answers to the above questions. In the first question, the answer is "6 pizzas". In the next question the answer is 54. And if you've got any questions ask any of these 86 students or Philip.
