This writeup is brought to you by Peer Pressure, the place to look for good clothing at a good price. The Merchants first game of the day was against the local Guelph team and after the long drive down the boys were ready to play. The defense was shutting down the Guelph batters, not allowing a run over the first four innings while the offence was doing its job as well * picking up 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead after four. Guelph managed one run in the fifth inning then the wheels fell off for the Merchants as the error bug raised its ugly head again and Guelph counted 4 runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Merchants picked up two runs in the sixth to make it a 5-4 game but that was as close as the boys were to get as Guelph scored one more in the seventh to round out the scoring and take a 6-4 victory. Clay Brown started on the mound arid did a great job until a blister forced him out of the game with a 2-1 lead. Marshal McQuaid came on in relief but just couldn't contain the Guelph batters and the error bug all at once. Doing the hitting for the Merchants in this game were; Doug Short and Marshal McQuaid with a double each, Jon Froats with two singles and Derek Tindall, Scott Jeffery and Jason Best with a single each. The Merchants next game was against Stratford and although the Merchants put up a good solid effort they came up just a bit short as they lost by a 5-3 score. This was a very close game as the score was tied at three a piece after six innings of play but the Merchants just couldn't overcome the two runs that Stratford picked up in the top of the seventh that sealed the win. Marshal McQuaid started on the mound but took a linedrive onhis pitching arm that put him out of the game. Jon Froats came on in relief and did a superb job. Doing the hitting in this game for the Merchants were; Doug Short with a triple, Marshal McQuaid with a double and singles to Jason Best and Jon Froats. Excellent effort by both teams, with Greenbank coming up with the win, due to a strong at bat in the open inning. Brian's Towing had many super hits, including a 3 RBI triple by Kellen Jackson. Good teamwork in the field as well, with a great double play effort by Nicole Reinhart and Megan Venner. Greenbank's team was tough at the bats, with 7 doubles and 2 triples, special mention to Russell Till. Great pitching by Callan Nesbitt and fine defensive skills by Brandon Davis. Taylor Mites on road to Stouffville After a rain out last Saturday, Taylor-Ford Mercury Mites enjoyed a great day on Sunday participating in their first tournament in Stouffville. Unionville was our 9am opponents and Port Perry was led by Jeff Corbett, who scored twice. The see-saw battle had Taylor-Ford Mites come back to within one run. The tying run was called out at the plate to end the game. Next game was against the host. team. Taylor-Ford Mites spotted Stouffville an early lead and tried hard to come back with a grand slam by Ashley Lucas and a 3 RBI triple by Michael Lycett. Steve Groves had a nice hit but it wasn't enough to catch Stouffville. Atlpm we met Richmond Hill. The Taylor-Ford Mercury Mites' Ashley Lucas swatted another homer with Justin Koury on board to give us a lead. Richmond Hill answered back and added some insurance runs with smart base running. Aurora was our final opponents. They were the strongest team in the tournament and gave us a demonstration of solid play and discipline. Keith Forbes played well and got on base and Justin Koury stole home for our only run. After another rain out, Port Perry went to Peterbofough at 2pm on June 11th. The Peterborough pitcher was red hot and threw a no-hitter, striking out each of our players at'bat once. Chris Isaacs got on with a walk and eventually stole home for our only run.
