Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 13, 1995 -- 3 = High winds cause plenty of damage Wilson Costelo isn't quite sure what hit his property in rural Scugog Township last week But he is sure it did a a lot of damage in a very short period of time. Wilson was working on his truck in the back yard of his property on the Scugog 9th Line just west of the Marsh Hill Road about 5:00 PM June 7 when the skies darkened and the rain came down in sheets. He moved under the shelter of the back porch and suddenly the winds picked up to a ferocious velocity and he watched in horror and amazement as several large mature trees were snapped off or torn out by the roots. "It was amazing. I had never seen anything like that before," he told the Citizen a couple of hours later as he surveyed the damage. The large trees in his back-yard toppled on his 760 cc motorcyle and flattened his car and a pick-up truck. Luckily, that was the extent if damage. One toppled tree was close to a fenced pen where he keeps a couple of dogs. His neighbour just to the west, Craig Yabsley, was not so lucky. A large tree in his side yard was snapped and fell across the house, creating a hole in the roof. Wilson said the ferocious winds lasted no more than two or three minutes. "I saw the trees being up-rooted and thought to myself, 'oh, boy, what kind of damage is going to be done," he said. He's not sure if it was some kind of a twister or a hurricane, but he said it took place almost ten years to the day after the hurricane hit Barrie, Ontario. Whatever it was, the winds cut a swath of damage in roughly a north to south direction for several hundred feet, and most of the up- rooted trees were right in Wilson's yard just a few feet from his back door. Wilson said an ice storm this past winter toppled several trees and he had just got that mess cleared up when the wind and rain storm struck last week. Facing a second large clean-up of branches and large tree trunks he said he might as well cut down all the trees in his back yard.
