my" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 20, 1995 -- 27 A Taylor Mites looking better Taylor-Ford Mercury Mites visited Pickering June 13th, and it was-a perfect day for baseball. Ashley Lucas put in a great effort pitching a complete game. Our bats were hot as Peter Jones hit two home runs; one a grand slam. He reached home safely three times on four at bats. Mike Lycett, Jeff Corbett, Steve Groves, and Andrew Hale ' \ ENTIIN ip A: A ] all scored twice and all our players reached home at least once. Pickering had fine base- running and we were tied going into the bottom of the last inning. ' We tried but we couldn't hold off their persistent base stealing as they cashed in the winning run. June 15th the scene was Stouffville for another exciting contest. jo . J 606 SLOPITCH TOUR Dérryl'Copithorn pitched well and helped Chris Isaacs who also cranked a homer. Leo Taillon swatted two singles and showed his arm on short stop throwing to first where Shane Jeffrey's sure glove completed the plays. Despite our improved play the Mustangs came up short on the final tally. Pickering Red Sox sting the Mosquitos The Moore Mosquitoes met the Pickering Red Sox at Broughm ball yard in their first meeting of the year, The boys were fired up and ready to play. Scott Evans drew the starting pitching assignment and looked real sharp in the starting role. Port Perry bats were silent in the first inning so the Team took to the field a little unnerved. The first two Pickering batters were retired quickly on sharply hit ground balls to Jordan Froats at shortstop: "Then with Pickering runners on 2nd and 3rd, Scott gunned a third strike call past a surprised Pickering batter to retire the side. In the 2nd, Pierce Jones started the hitting and stole 2nd: For a minute it looked like Port might jump into the lead but solid Pickering defence again held Port Perry scoreless. Pickering threatened to score again in the 2nd but the inning ended on a great running catch by Michael Thompson to leave the game at a scoreless tie. The third inning was much the same as the first two as Port Perry batters couldn't solve the strong pitching from Pickering. Frustrated, the Port Perry team had a momentary lapse in the bottom of the 3rd and were rocked for 6 runs before they could retire the side. The 5th inning looked promising as Pierce Jones connected again for a leadoff single. A good sacrifice by Stuart Cochrane moved him to 2nd. However, the inning was closed down when the Pickering 3rd baseman made a diving stop on a hard hit shot by Derek Bond and threw Derek out at first by half a step. Jason Behling came in to pitch for Port Perry in the bottom of the 5th and shut down the surging Red Sox. To start the 6th, Kane Van Aston hit a towering single to right field and immediately stole second to get into scoring position. Next pitch and the speedy Van Aston was standing on 3rd. Jason Behling singled to bring in the first Port Perry run, stole second and was driven in on a hard hit single by Jordan Froats. Jordan stole 2nd and was driven home on a long single by Michael Thompson. 'Scott Evans followed with another single but a strong throw from the outfield by Pickering all the way to home 'edged the Port bid for the 3rd run. That proved to be it for Port as the Red Sox settled down and retired the side. Pickering bats came alive again in the bottom of the 6th. After 4 nsecutive singles, Mighael took A hard chopper in the chest and after knocking it down threw out the runner. He shook it off and continued, to play. Ryan Hnatko finished the Pickering rally with a fine one handed catch in left field. Pickering relievers baffled Port Perry in the top of the 7th with a 3 up'3 down inning to end the game. The final score of 13 to 2 for Pickering didn't reflect the close play for the majority of the game. The Moore Lawncare Mosquitoes are getting stronger every game and are going to be a tough team to beat by the end of the season.
