Squirts on the move with 3 wins Scugog's Squirt Fastball team has been working hard to bring their level of play up to a competitive standard and this week's games showed signs that they are headed in the right direction. The team was on the road to Aurora on June 13th and the outcome was a 13-3 Legion victory. None of the Aurora runs were earned in this one. Our infield played solidly in recording 11 fielding outs. Tim Jones pitched the 'W' with a 3- hitter, 1 walk and 5 K's. Our offense was led by Mike Wiseman - 3 hits and 1 walk, Cory McQuade, Matt Skerratt and Tim all had 2 hits. Matt Fraser got his first career double! Mike Koury singled and had a sacrifice while Adam Lamb also singled. Mike LeFort earned 3 walks Devon Howsam scored during our big fourth inning rally. ' On June 15th, our Legionaires were at home to the Willowdale Grizzlies and avenged an earlier loss to them by notching a well earned 12-1 victory. This was our first streak" of the season and it felt good. At St. Catherine's the team pulled off their first pitch-out pick-off play of the season. In this game another season first was our 6-4- 3 double play. Lots of good base runririg was evident in this one as well as improved defensive composure when Willowdale mounted some rallys (especially a third inning bases Joaded situation ended by a timely strikeout). Our bats were warm early in the game as we opened with 3 consecutive hits followed by Matt Skerratt's triple. Matt had 2 other hits as well. Rookie Adam Lamb (out of our Greenbank farm team with Cory McQuade) continues to improve with 8 hits out of the lead-off slot. Mike Koury had 2 hits, Tim had 3, Jeff & Mike LeFort each singled. First year squirts Luke Pilkey and David Akermanis both showed good pitch judgement to earn walks. Defensively, Devon Howsam and Red' Fraser are also coming along well in their rookie squirt Fastball careers. Mike LeFort pitched well in last inning relief including +snaring a line drive for the last out of the game. Tim earned the win with a 3 hitter, 4 walks and 12 strikeouts and showed grit with runners in scoring position. On June 18th, the Legionaires travelled to play their nemesis Bramalea team. Dpspite being shorthanded the team. was rewarded for their drive by a 3-1 victory. This rare win over a Bramalea team was thanks to timely offense and defense though we are still generous to our opponents in leaving runners in scoring position too often. Matt Skerratt had a triple, single and 2 stolen bases plus a tagout at home from his catcher's position. Mike Wiseman also had 2 hits. Tim had a single to go with 2 walks and a stolen base while Jeff contributed a key first inning single. Our early first inning 2-0 Port lead gave our 'squad confidence to go out and battle their hosts. Tim pitched confidently with his defense playing 'heads-up' behind him and also made a tagout at home after Matt's transfer of a passed ball. He ended with a career high 15 strike outs (including the side in the last inning), 1 walk, 6 hits. Our boys are jubilant in their unexpected win and this was the emotional hi-lite of the season thus far for the team. Our cheering captains "Lambo" and "Crockett" are learning how to get the team adrenalin going form the bench. Our second year "veteran" players are showing improved leadership as the Legionaires are evolving a "team" chemistry. Come on out and lend your support to the hard-working team in the next York-Durham League home game on Thursday, June 22 at the Water St. S. Diamond vs. King City.
