gog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 27, 1995 -- 13 A State of the nation on Canada Day 1995! To the Editor: Re: State of the Nation-Canada Day 1995 The following is an editorial that appeared in the Toronto Evening News 110 years ago in 1885. An excerpt from the book entitled "Canadian History in documents 1763 - 1966. Little has changed in. 110 years. "Quote - Ontario is proud of being loyal to England. Quebec is loyal to sixteenth century France. Ontario pays about three-fifths of Canada's taxes, fights all the battles of provincial rights, sends nine-tenths of the soldiers to fight the rebels, and gets sat on by Quebec for her pains. Quebec since the time of Intendant Bigot, has been extravagant, corrupt and venal, whenever she could with other peoples money and has done nothing for herself or for the progress of her own earnings Quebec gets the pie! Ontario gets the mush and pays the piper for the Bleu Carnival--- hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent Gerry's Restoring cars is a unique hobby for Gerry. After suffering a bad injury skiing a few years ago, he decided to pack the winter sport in and look for a safer recreation. But to have any kind of hobby you need money. Having had part-time jobs for several years now, Gerry's currently working after school and on weekends at Canadian Tire where he's employed in the Parts Department. With help from his co-workers he's become all that more knowledgeable about cars. As for the expenses he's incurred, Gerry just shrugs in a non-committal way and says 'it all depends on the amount of restoration you do". "The sky's the limit on what you want to do to a car" he said, adding "you get out of it what you put into ity'. "It's great having your own money 'cause then you can put'it towards something you like to do" he told the Citizen. While his mother doesn't' know how to drive the standard 'three on the tree column shift', it's either his parents or older brother who accompany him on the road as he still has his 365 licence. Gerry has plans to enrol in a driver's education program this summer after which he'll get his licence. "Any excuse to get out of the driveway and he's gone" his father Ron, laughed. He and his wife, Marguerite, feel it's a wonderful hobby for their son to pursue. "It gives them responsibility and there's always something to learn when you've got an old car" his father said, proudly. As 'the Republicans said after the war of secession "if we are to have a solid South, we-must have a solid North". If we in Canada are to be confronted with a solid French vote, we must have a solid English vote. If Quebec is to always pose as a beggar in the Dominion soup kitchen, she must be defranchised as a vagrant. If she is to be a traitor in our wars, a thief in our treasury, a conspirator in our Canadian households of had better go. She is no use in Confederation, her representatives are a weakness in Parliament. Montreal would be as dead as Quebec City but the the anglosaxons who are persecuted and kept down by the ignorant French. We are sick of the French Canadians with their patriotic blabber and their Pontiac Owning a vintage car isn't new to the Mitchell family. Gerry has two uncles who own old cars too. While one owns a '40 Ford Sedan, the other has a '32 Ford Coupe Hot Rod. Looking forward to touring with the Cruisin' Classics Car Club 'this fall, he's already picked up an application form and when he joins, will be the youngest member of the Club. conspiracies against the treasury and the peace of 'what, without them, would be a united Canada. With Quebec holding the balance of power, Canada isn't safe for a moment, The British North American Act which is our alleged Constitution must be altered so as to deprive these venal politicians of their powers or Confederation will fail. As far as we are concerned, and we are concerned for the good of Canada, Quebec could go out of Confederation tomorrow, and we would not shed a tear except for joy."...end of quote. One hundred and ten years later we still face the same problems. Pierre Trudeau said "Quebec sets the agenda and the rest of Canada follows". Quebec Premier Parizean and Bloc Leader Bouchard are hell bent on destroying Canada as a nation. Our 70 cent dollar is just one sTgn of our malaise caused by Quebec separatists. Gary Lautens an executive and noted columnist with the Toronto Star said "Quebec must go! No more deals- let them go." Ontario taxpayers send $50 billion a year to Ottawa while Quebec sends only $24 billion. Quebec takes $4 billion a year more than it pays in. (1990) The voters in the 1992 referendum sent a clear message to Ottawa and Quebec -- no more concessions. Fini. The Ontario NDP are on record as wanting to make Ontario officially bilingual. SILGAILIS, P.ENG. COMMISSIONER OF WORKS Act has cost taxpayers an estimated billion dollars since 1986. Premier Peterson gave us 32 .tax increases followed by 33 for Bob Rae--a total of 65 in the past 10 years. Ottawa gave us the GST. Prime Minister Chretien said if elected he would kill the GST. Deputy Sheila Copps said she would resign if it was not removed in 6 months. Prevaricators abound. Make up Canadians. Enough is enough! Dean J. Kelly, President Association of Dedicated Canadians (since 1967) Port Perry, Ontario Will miss patios To the Editor: In response to council's decision to "do away with" the licensed patios on Queen Stj we wish to respond as follows. Port Perry being the "tourist town" that it is, has many people excitedly awaiting its annual Festival Days. To arbitrarily end this Queen St. tradition by council, shows a tunnel visions approach as well as a lack of commitment to a large part of this community. Many of us look forward to socializing with old and new friends, scanning the crowd, and being able to relax in our home town. We don't feel that these licensed patios discourage family fun. There are times when adults peed to relax without the kids. We're sure the kids will have their fun too, as most people recognize the responsibility and needs of family fun. In closing, we recommend that council consider alternate arrangements for the rest of the public. This should not end a tradition. Is this not an over reaction on the part of council?
