"The people in the federal riding of Durham will not have to foot the bill to furnish this member of Parliament with 'a lavish pension plan. I'm not taking it," the freshmen MP said in a statement Monday, The Commons passed revisions to the pension plan last week which raises the age of eligibility Veterans to parade as part of July 1 festivities Canadian veterans who saw action in Europe during World War 2 will have a prominent role in Canada Day celebration coming up this Saturday, July. 1 in Port Perry. . A contingent of up to 40 veterans has been invited by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce to parade from the Scugog murficipal building, down Queen Street and into Palmer Park where Canada Day opening .ceremonies will be held at 8:00 PM on July 1. Each of the veterans will be presented with certificates of appreciation from Durham MP Alex Shepherd and by Mayor Howard Hall from the people of Scugog Township. Rick McCoshen, one of the Canada" organizers for the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, said the idea to invite the veterans to be part of the festivities is in keeping with the theme this year "proud to be Canadian," and to let the community recognize the veterans for their role in the war ii Europe that ended 50 years ago this spring. Bob Douglas, CD of Port Perry, National Executive Director of the Koreans Veterans Assoc. has been working with the Chamber of Commerce in organizing the veterans participation in Canada Day. But Shepherd said even with the revisions last week, the plan "is still far too generous." For example, he points out that an MP with 19 years eligibility will get a pension of $50,000, more than twice the $24,000 average pension for those in the private sector. And he noted that forwevery dollar contributed by MPs to the + plan, the taxpayers contribute three dollars. "MPs pensions are 'one the pergs giving elected reps the incentive to hang on even if they are useless in the job," said Shepherd. He commented that he never thought of politics as a career path. "Elected representatives should bring experience and ' training with them," he said. Before going into politics in the last federal election Shepherd had been an accountant, financial consultant and property developer in Port Perry. In his statement that he is opting out of the pansion plan, Shepherd said he knows of former MPs earning a living and drawing pensions 'as 'high $40,000 annually at the same time. "This is wrong and unfair to taxpayers and purely. took advantage of you--the people paying the bills," he said.
