FIFT Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, July 5, 1995 -- 13 Art Richardson devotes countless hours to Museum by Heather McCrae When Art Richardson and his wife retired from farming in the Spring of 1987 and moved to Port Perry, he wondered what he'd do to occupy his time. While working all those years on his Ashburn farm and raising a family as well, there hadn't been any free time to pursue a hobby. "Raising six kids took all your time" he laughed, during an interview at his Port Perry home recently, "there simply wasn't time for outside interests". But that fall of '87 when he was out driving on Scugog Island, Art happened to stop and visit volunteers working at the Scugog Shores Museum. Soon after he became a volunteer himself, and has devoted hundreds of hours since, restoring the grounds and buildings on the site. The next year Art became a member of the museum Board and has been since. For the last four years, he's also been Chairman of the Scugog Shores Museum Board Devoting endless hours at the museum over the years, the archives have often been referred to as his 'second home' His wife, Eva, good naturedly Clank Ostomy Supply Co. But why does Art channel his energies towards the 'little museum? "I like antiques and it gives me something to do" he said, simply, "and I enjoy it too". "A lot of the buildings have been in need of repair and I do what I can (to repair them). I try to keep it (grounds) attractive and someone else will after I'm gone, too" he said. But, perhaps, there is a bit of family nostalgia that draws him to the tiny museum, too. His grandmother, Annie Adams, who was raised on Scugog Island, also attended the school located on the museum grounds. While Art is always willing to repair anything that needs fixing, he says he's not one for doing tours He told the Citizen he's happy the Museum got funds to restore the old church. Since the renovations were completed a pouple of years ago several social events have taken place at the old church, including a few weddings In fact, Art and Eva's son, David, got married at the little church last month Art feels the recent Herb Fest and Teddy Bear Picnic held at GUARDIAN DRUGS = Port Perry Pharmacy Ltd. 209 Queen St. 985-2231 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM SENIORS (65 8 up) 10% Discount All Purchases! "Last year our attendance was way up over a thousand from the year before" he said. Speaking to Dan Robert, curator of the museum, Mr. Robert told the Citizen, "Art has been invaluable at the museum. Since joining the Museum Board, he's been instrumental in cleaning up the site. He volunteers lots of hours here and a lot of the work noticed here is attributed to Art". Joan Scott, a life member of the Scugog Historical Society, that is part of the Scugog Shores Museum, told the Citizen "he does a great job, devoting phenomenal hours to do the best he can at the museum." As for Eva, how does she feel about her husband spending so much time at the local archives? "As long as he's happy, that's the main thing" she replied, smiling. "There are a lot of wonderful museum volunteers" Art said, "and some have worked a lot longer than I have".
