Daniels JUST SAYING NO IS NOT ENOUGH Both supporters and opposers of abortion agree that life begins at conception. The problem is not when life begins, but when that life has enough value to warrant protection. In 1967, at the First International Conference on Abortion, sponsored by Harvard Divinity School and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Foundation, some non-religious participants said, "We can find no point in time between the union of sperm and egg and the birth of an infant at which point we can say that this is not a human life" (cited in Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, p.211). Since pro-life people accept the sanctity of life in the womb, they work hard to encourage women to carry their children to term. However, just saying no to abortion is not enough. Frederica Mathewes-Green, director of communications for the National Women's Coalition for Life, offers the following practical advice to those concerned with helping women choose alternatives to abortion ("Encouraging the Choice For Life," Christianity Today, January 9, 1995). Fight isolation with friendship. Many women choose abortion because of a sense of being left alone and unsupported. Local pregnancy centres can often bring women in similar circumstances together for mutual support and encouragement. Just knowing one is not alone can be a great solace. Encourage natural bonds. Often an unexpected pregnancy creates a family breakdown, particularly when it is a teen pregnancy. By helping to restore these relationships the mother-to-be is often encouraged to continue the pregnancy. Promote adoption. Adoption can benefit both the baby and its mother. Though it can be painful, knowing one's child will be adopted into a loving family is often all that is needed to help f NZ , ayberry 8 Fine Clothing, Gifts, Antiques & Other Lovely Things WOOLRICH # HEIRLOOMS ¥ SUTTLES & SEAWINDS Laboratory testing shows that Sunveil Sunwear effectively reduces transmission ¢ 2 126 Brock st. Here is an opportunity for churches to extend a helping hand by reaching out to poor women with spiritual and material needs. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself" (Matthey 22:37-39 NIV). To love God involves loving our neighbour, and our neighbour includes the pregnant woman and her unborn child.
