Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 18, 1995 -- 13 on Golden Slippers nearing tenth anniversary by Heather McCrae For nine years now the Golden Slippers have been entertaining audiences across the country with their old time music, including traditional Scottish and Irish jigs, reels and waltzes. This talented group of retired and semi-retired musicians originated in 1986. Doreen Adam, the group's leader, had been given a fiddle by one of her sons but became frustrated when she couldn't master the instrument. So she asked her good fiddlin' friend, Edna Beckett, to help master the instrument. Pretty soon they asked others to join in the fun. Helen Redman brought an autoharp, John Beckett brought the snare drum and spoons, Lucille Gray a keyboard and George Freeman brought his banjo. His wife, Ethel, dusted off her father's accordion, Vi Hanley brought her mandolin and Kay Hanley borrowed a clave. Marion Carter and Betty Reader heard guitar players were needed so took their first pension cheques and enrolled in a crash course at Durham College. Next came Joan Beazer with her tin whistle, and tambourine. The latest member to join was Doug Barber bringing his double bass fiddle. While Kay's the oldest member, Joan is the one who drives the longest distance. Living in Kingston she drives back and forth twice a week to attend practices and never misses a gig. In the winter, during their practices, they didn't like wearing boots or walking around in their stocking feet so Doreen solved the problem knitting everyone a pair of golden slippers out of gold syntex and "The Golden Slippers" band was City HEARING CENTRE PROFESSIONAL HEARING SERVICES including : ww Audiometric Testing = Impedance Audiometry w= Real Ear Measurement w Electronic Hearing Aid Analysis w Prescription and Fitting of Hearing Aids wr All make Repairs and Service PORT PERRY M 462 Paxton Street LIL 1L9 LINDSAY B 4 Lindsay Street North K9V 1T4 (705) 328-0145 born! One of their first gigs was at a political barbeque where they played before a crowd of over 3000 people. Since then they've played at almost 500 performances, entertaining audiences ranging from one person in an intensive care unit to crowds that have numbered in the thousands, including many dignitaries The greatest reward they can receive, they say, are the smiling faces, tapping toes and clapping hands of their audiences. And they've got a pretty active agenda lined up this summer. Playing at the Scugog Island church on July 23, the following Friday night (28) they're performing at the Twilight Meeting at Altona Lea Farm in Blackstock. Having played in several hospitals over the years, they're planning a performance for the chronic care. patients at Ross Memorial Hospital on August 9. And they'll be there at the Port Perry Fair on Labour Day, too. "Most of our gigs are referrals" Doreen told the Citizen, during a rehearsal at her Scugog Island home. The Golden Slippers have made two cassettes, "It's Never Too Late" and "Better Late Than Never" and are currently working on another tape. "It's never too late to learn" Doreen says and this group is testimony of it. Lucille Gray recently came home after spending three weeks on a tour bus in Great Britain. Taped music was played throughout the bus and Lucille's sending that bus driver the two tapes they've made. While Doreen is the road manager and leader, her husband, Jim, drives the "Golden Slippers" bus. aM Betty I I Brite odMk [) . . . € he {J » o/s SS, . [] !
