¢ wy 2 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 18, 1995 Festival Days will keep family fun themes The Scugog Chamber of Commerce will continue to build on the theme of old fashioned family fun for Festival Days next year, says vice president Rick McCoshen. While admitting he and other directors heard negative comments and criticism about this year's Festival Days, Mr. McCoshen told the Citizen "overall, the directors are very happy and feel it was a real success." "Oh, sure, we have some fine tuning and work to do for next year," he said in reference to criticism that there were not enough events to see and do on Queen and Water Streets over the weekend. Noting that the Chamber of Commerce deliberately excluded out of Township vendors from setting up on the street this year, he said the Chamber will work closely with local merchants to get more of their participation next year. "We want to bring tourists (to Festival Days) who will spend their money here, rather than have outside vendors take money out of the community," he stressed several times. Mr. McCoshen said the 50/60's Homes evacuated Several homes in Victorian Village had to evacuated last Wednesday morning after a construction worker accidently ruptured a 4 inch plastic line carrying natural gas. Durham Police said the worker was operating a machine on the un-opened section of Alma Street just west of Ash Street in Port Perry shortly after 8:00 AM July 12 when the gas line and a Bell phone line were damaged. The homes were ordered evacuated as a precaution as the leaking gas drifted in a south- easterly direction Crews from Consumer Gas were on the scene in minutes and repaired the damage quickly. Those ordered out of their homes were allowed to return about an hour later. Replacing Windows? ~ Do'it right, with Repla Consider Repla's New V-Plus line ... today's most popular styles. SHOWROOM 193 North St. PORT PERRY 985-4910 A Dot theme of "cruisin' thru summer" with old fashioned family fun may take a year or two to develop fully. The Cruisin' Classic vintage car display on Queen Street was an important part of that theme and the car club will be part of Festival Des in 1996. As weil, he said, there are plans to integrate an antique and vintage boat show into the program next year. Financially, the event will be a success for the Chamber of Commerce as there were capacity crowds in the Festival Tent for the dances and entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. Mr. McCoshen noted that Festival Days remains the principal fund-raiser for the Chamber of Commerce and money raised is used to help cover costs of "non-profit" "I can see this b a really nice party," he said, adding the Chamber's decision not to allow beer gardens on Queen Street will stay in effect next year as. well. © Ch Pp ed events such as Canada Days and the Santa Claus Parade. Mr. McCoshen agreed that the blistering heat and humidity on Friday probably kept some people home beside the pool or in front of the air conditioner. Crowds on the street and midway picked up on Saturday after the heat wave subsided somewhat. There were some scheduling problems that can be worked out for next year. For example, the Mutt Show and the Polkaroo snow for children over-lapped on Saturday morning. Both, obviously are popular with the youngsters and their parents. Durham Police said that aside from a few late night scuffles, the crowds were well behaved and there were no serious incidents over the weekend. i 34 Water Street, Port Perry, Ontario LOL 1)2 985-8471 PERSONAL ATTENTION TO ALL OF FORDER - INSURANCE BROKERS (NC. Most of the calls to the Fire Department (15) were for downed hydro lines. The severe electrical storm Sunday evening caused some $5,000 damage to a house on Crandell Street when struck by lightning. Across south central Ontarib, more than 30,000 hydro customers were still without power as of Monday morning. Officials said it will be mid- week before customers in isolated cottage country areas have power restored.
