m2 Sciigog Citizen - Tuesday, July 25,1995 Osteoporo by Heather McCrae Starting this September a: Scugog Osteoporosis Support Group will'be forming in Port Perry. The comeept, of starting a support group originated last February when Port Perry resident, Marjorie Wilson, invited people with osteoporosis to a Valentines Tea at her home. Marjorie, being the founder and President of Women Against Osteoporosis (WAO), has this disease "About 25 attended and many more called who were unable to come due-to prior commitments and the phone was still ringing two weeks later", she said. "Osteoporosis is the most prevalent health problem for . women at age 50 or more, more $o than a stroke, heart disease, ---- ~-- breast cancer and (liabete8" she told the Citizen, Not entirely a woman's disease, ane in every 8 men gt age 50 has the disease 00." Between the ages of 50 and 80, women lose about 30% of their skeletal mass because of the decline in'gstrogen, a hormone that maintains bone density in women. This decline is most ° dramatic during the first five to ten years after menopause and can be the cause of bone mass loss very quickly. Lower mass means bones become weaker, more brittle. Marjorie was diagnosed with osteoparosis in her late forties and tests showed she had 45% bone loss, which is extreme. She suffered her first of many fractures shortly afterwards while out for a stroll with her husband. "Because there are no scars, banddges . or ' casts with osteoporosis, my friends never realized there was pain involved" said Marjorie. Feeling very much alone, she was terrified and felt the need for support and started a support group. To are 8 date, there _. osteoporosis support groups in Ontario and there are others in the works, such as the Scugog one, she said. With over 600 members across Canada in WAO and the numbers steadily climbing, these people who attend support groups benefit greatly from the empathetic caring and sharing of the disease. | "They also become more educated and tHat helps them | cope better", Marjorie said. "We make people more aware of the disease and make them know the importance of an early diagnosis". With proper treatment that includes hormones, calcium supplements and an efrly diagnosis, the progression of bone loss can be stopped dead in its tracks and, for many can be reversed. : Marjorie is now at 28% bone loss, which is still high, but she was extrerhe before and is back on the golf course again this year, something she hasn't done often since her diagnosis. Awareness of the disease is certainly on the increase. Just pick up a magazine or newspaper and you'll see something about this crippling malady. "At first I thought it was going to be a class of girls, but it was a mixed class" she said "and I wondered if my presentation , would be too stuffy, but the guys were equally as interested as the girls" she said. "That high school group I'd spoken to, they pursued it, I didn't and that's encouraging". "Scugog has 'been a very supportive area. I've never had such an eager response" she said It's hoped this new support group will meet once a month and currently the location is Port Perry United Church. The meeting is Tuesday, September 26, at 1:30pm. All those who attended or telephoned about the Valentine's Tea will be contacted: Spending slashed From page one public wants," he said. : O'Toole said Ontario can expect to see more reductions in spending over the next several months. Part of last Friday's announcement was an order to all government ministries to find ways of trimming $500 million from their annual budgets and capital programs. Scugog Mayor Howard said he is concerned that supplemental money for road projects such as on Mary Street in Port Perry will be cut in half this year. "The Mary Street. project is finished. I don't know how the government can now say we (Scugog) will only get half the supplemental," said the Mayor, adding he is asking for a meeting this week with O'Toole and transportation ministry officials to find out the status of the 1995 supplementals. As for next year, the Mayor said it won't come as a surprise to him if the provincial government cuts ' all supplemental grants for road work, and chops the subsidy paid to municipalities for roads dept. operating budgets.
