Rotary Park -- by Sara Brown. i This summer, myself and co- worker Jeff Whitfield have been assigned a wonderful task through the Scugog Townships EYC (Environmental Youth Corp). We are honoring the naturalization projects put on by the Parks & Recreation Department of Scugog. We are excited about not only being hands on connected with the earth, but also about promoting & encouraging the use of Food bank may be busy Oct. 1 The Operation Scugog Food Bank will likely be a busier place when government cuts in welfare spending take affect October 1." Anne Wanninkhof told the Citizen it's impossible to predict at this time just how much busier things will get at the Food Bank this fall. The Food Bank presently provides hampers to about 25 families and individuals each week, but with the government cutting benefits to Ontario's welfare recipients by 21.6 per cent on October 1, there are predictions that more people will be forced to use food banks across the province. Noting that the Operation Scugog Food Bank is not just for those on welfare, Mrs. Wanninkhof said she hopes the numbers. don't increase by 40 or 50 people: "The community is very generous (with donations) to us," she said, adding the Food Bank should not have trouble. coping if the increase in users is not too large. 3 - e Cause for celebration? The question of naturalization & its purposes is one of great importance to this community. Scugog Township has recognized the importance of naturalization and has been struggling to inform the community of its need in such times, of ecological stress. The Rotary Park, situated north of the boat launch, is one of the naturalization attempts made by the Township, its beauty & importance are undeniable. The definition of a naturalized' aréa is quite simple, the area should be a self sustaining ecosystem representing the natural environment before human interference. A One objective of a naturalized park is to require little, i maintenance, hence the long grasses. The more independent Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 25, 1995 -- 7 -- an ecosystem. remains; the" healthier our air quality, water supplies and soil samples will be. There are over 11 types of native grasses within the Rotary Park; to cut these would be decreasing the diversity, and also the strength of the natural park. 'There is a small amount of maintenance done within the park in order to create a mild buffer zone between human activity and the project. The path system boardwalk, lookout locations and benches are all forms of moderate human interference. They were introduced to the park to assist in positive public perception..they will allow us to enter into a world that existed before we did and experience the wild within wildlife. J - ee .. Civic Auditorium. Draw to be held Sat., July 29 - 2:00 PM. COLORATIONS selectively filled with species native to both Ontario and Canada, many of which people often view as weeds. Weeds are the moss prominent plants in Canada, and also the least appreciated. The definition of a weed is a plant that grows where humans do not desire them to grow. So in actuality, theré are no weeds in a naturalized area. The long grasses and weeds that have tolerated public criticism are the very foundations to which our planet credits its survival. Not only do they cover the ground keeping soil in place yand acting as natural filters to the ghemicals we introduce to nature at your doorstep the land and water, but they also provide food, shelter and protection the creatures with which we co-exist. Many insects, mammals, birds and plants are greatly appreciative of the Rotary Park, It is very few creatures on this planet who disagree with naturalization.. it seems to be the only future we have. So feel free to venture down, many of our introduction days are spent there cataloging species and helping the park on its journey to becoming independent.
