By David 8, Daniels TWO-PARENT FAMILY IS BEST Social research indicates the Judeo-Christian understanding of the family is the best way to go. That's the conclusion reached by Glenn Stanton, social research analyst for the public policy division of Focus On The Family, an 18-year-old, non- profit organization dedicated to strengthening the home. Writing in the August, 1995 issue of "Focus on the Family Magazine," Stanton says "scientific research vindicates the Creator's idea of the family." Stanton's article defends the Judeo-Christian understanding of the family, sometimes described as the traditional family. But what does this traditional family look like? Christians, believing the Bible to be God's revealed will, look there for an understanding of God's ideaPfor the family. The biblical view of a family has several components. The first is a woman and a man committed to a lifelong marriage relationship. When asked if it was lawful (in God's eyes) for a man to divorce his wife, Jesus responded: "Haven't you read...that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man no separate" (Matthew 19:4-6 NIV). A man and a woman married for life is the launching pad for a healthy family. Naturally flowing from this lifelong marriage relationship is a commitment to keep all sexual activity within the bounds of that marriage relationship. "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral" (Hebrews 13:4 NIV). 'marriage as a ' two-parent family is still the marriage is between one man and one woman, and that sexual relationships are to be enjoyed in that context, it follows that, premarital cohabitation and divorce should be discouraged. Stanton says it should be "socially stigmatized" again. , Because the Bible describes lifetime commitment between a man and a woman, and because the Bible limits sexual relationships to women and men married to one another, the ideal is that children be born to or adopted into a home where both mom and dad are married and living under the same roof. It is the biblical portrait of the family which Stanton claims is vindicated by scientific research.' In my next column I will share some of Stanton's findings supporting the view that lifelong monogamous marriages produce a better envirgnment for healthy family li .
