Everyone who attended the grand opening of Ocala Orchards Farm Winery was in a mood for celebrating. Owned by Irwin and Alissa Smith, the winery located at 971 High Point Road, Is In photo with Irwin and Alissa are their daughters, Kristyn Large crowd toasts opening of Scugog's first winery by Heather McCrae Well over 200 people attended the official opening of the 41st winery in Ontario last Friday evening. Ocala Orchards Farm Winery, owned by Irwin and Elissa Smith of Port Perry, is the only Ontario , Winery east of Toronto and the only winery in the Durham Region, as well. When Irwin began dreaming about owning a winery and growing grapes about three years ago, some were skeptics! of his plans because they doubted grapes could be grown and thrive in Durham Region. But Ocala Orchards Farm Winery has proven them wrong as a test plot of grapes, in its third year, is thriving well on the farm. "It's unbelievable; we are the only municipality that has its own winery," a proud Mayor Howard Hall said before snipping the red ribbon at the official opening ceremonies. The winery has ten different wines and already, since production began a few months ago, has received four bronze medals for its Empire Apple Wine, Montmorency Cherry Wine, Ocala Golden Iced Pear Wine and Spartan Apple Wine. Other wines produced are Ocala Golden Iced Apple Wine, Idared Apple Wine, MacIntosh Apple Wine, Riesling Grape Wine, Barrel aged Chardonnay Grape Wine and Ped Delicious Apple Wine. Leonard Fr: a ber of renovating the former dairy barn into the award-winning winery, was given special thanks. Together, he and Irwin have toured several wineries in the Niagara Region, checking out the designs and layouts before selecting the Ocala design A bottle of MacIntosh wine was presented to the Scugog Shores Museum where it will be kept under lock and key and will remain a part of the museum's archives. Grace Hastings, a well-known ber of the Scugog Historical the training and development of Taste Control with the LCBO said, "Ocala Orchards Farm Winery is a part of the history of the Ontario wine industry." "To see the grapes growing in the field is a cultural, social and economic benifit in the wine industry," he said. Rick Huntington, the general contractor who was given the job of Society, and also Irwin's former vocal music teacher, accepted the bottle. Samples of MacIntosh, Montmorency Cherry and Iced Apple Wines were served to the crowd Friday evening. Among the several varieties of wine, Ocala Orchards Farm Winery also carries several gifts for the wine lover, too.
