Constables Brian Hall and Al Brouwer of 26 Division are the two officers mannipg the only police boat in Durham Region. Patrolling Lake Scugog as well as Lake Simcoe and Lake Ontario, the two officers stop boats at random, checking for adequate safety equipment on board and alcohol. They're always on the lookout iif'a boater is operating a boat carelessly, too Safety devices, which include ample life jackets, bailing can, paddles and a horn that actually honks are just some of the things they look for when stopping boats. Open bottles of alcohol are automatically seized. Already, this year, the two officers have made at least 10 arrests on the lake. Because the lakes are federal waterways, an arrest is made rather than a fine given. "Anything other than a liquor offence is federal" they said. "Any safety offence is a federal offence." This is the fourth year the 25 foot Baha boat has been used on water patrol. Loaded with a 454 Chev engine with dual prop Volvo drive, it's got plenty of power and: can get to an emergency in a hurry. Over the years there haven't been regulations on age restrictions and licencing but the officers feel, due to the increase and popularity of boating, regulations will be imminent as soon as next year.
