The lead article in the September 16-23 Starweek TV Magazine decries the "aggregate acceptance of rude language, foul imagery and gross behavior in the entertainment mainstream" (James Endrst, "How Low Can Starweek TV Magazine, The Toronto Star). Endrst comments on the crude and rude TV fair, referring to . several sitcoms in the current By the Book network lineup. While I am not surprised by his concern about declining moral decency in primetime, I was taken by she comments he: received when querying network executives. It seems no one wants to accept responsibility for declining standards. Endrst quotes ABC president David Westin, "The society, to some extent, has became crasser, and we move with that, (although) we shouldn't be making it more crass." Westin goes on to say that networks should follow society, not lead it. The president of CBS Harvest Home Service, Oct.1 at Museum The annual Harvest Home Thanksgiving Service will be held at the Scugog Museum Church this coming Sunday, October 1, starting at 7:30 PM. Sandy Beaton of the Presbyterian Church will be the guest speaker that evening with the choir of the Scugog Island United Church providing the music. Refreshments will follow the service. This'is a unique once-a-year event that you won't want to miss. There will no Musicale at the Museum Church on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 8. We will start again on October 15 with Jay King, a young Scugog Township vocalist who is one of our rising stars. The Music Box Inc., a Sweet Adeline group from Uxbridge will be there to entertain as well. Watch this space for information about up-coming musical performers at the Museum Church. Opening at 12:00 Noon Sunday, October 1st. We invite you to come in and browse the new store, Entertainment believes "America is changing, and...the programming is changing..." NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer says, "It is not the responsibility of network television to program for the children of America...The role of network television is to responsibly program for people who want to watch television." I realize I do not have access to the entire conversations Endrst had with these executives, but what I do have surely smacks of double-talk and shirking of responsibility. How can a network executive ay that there is no moral responsibility to program for children and ifn the same breath say their role'is to "responsibly program for people who want to watch television™? So who is responsible? We all are. Producers are responsible for what they make. Networks are responsible for what they present. Advertisers are responsible for what they sponsor. Parents are responsible for monitoring the television, turning off programming inappropriate for their children. And we are responsible for what we watch. Each person must take action appropriate to his or her situation, whether that be producing, sponsoring, 'or enter Since the Scripture holds us all accountable, each of us must do our part in working for wholesome, morally right entertainment. This is particularly true for those claiming to be Christians: "So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God" | (Romans 14:12 NIV). When I stand before God I won't be held accountable for the trash some network put on TV. I will be held responsible for how I dealt with it in my own home and life. If enough people refuse to participate, those producing this reprehensible stuff will be forced to listen. featuring a full range of quality fabrics and notions.
