TIZ ms Bcugog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 24, 1995 --17_ 4a .N SPORTS] MoJacks/Rebels i in wild 9-9 shoot out by John B. McClelland One would think that after watching his team skate to a 9-9 deadlock, MoJack head coach Chic Carnegie would be a little hot under the collar. On the contrary. Though he wasn't exactly doing cartwheels after the shoot- out Sunday night with the Campbellford Rebels, Carnegie said he saw "some positive things out there." He liked the way his players were hustling on the ice and said overall, it was a much better effort than in previous games. And he especially liked the first period when the | MoJacks romped to a 4-1 lead and looked like they were on their way to handing the Rebels their first defeat of the season. Rebels, in first place in the Empire Junior C League, had. eight wins and no losses going in to Sunday night's inter-locking match at the Scugog Arena, including a 9-2 drubbing of Uxbridge Friday and a 7-3 margin Saturday over North Frontenac. MoJacks bolted from the gate in a big hurry as Jeremy Geer on a heads- up breakaway gave the team a 1-0 lead at 7:19. Rookie Steve Barkwell upped it to 2-0 a minute later before Rebels captain Trevor Torrence beat Rick Hutchinson on a power play. MoJacks went to work on their own power play late in the frame when Barkwell one-timed the disc behind John Lalande at 16:02 and Keith Leslie re-directed a shot from the point while cruising in front of the Rebels cage. That made it 4-1 heading into the second period, but the Rebels must have had some kind of wake-up call as the promptly tied the game inside three. minutes on goals by Torrence, Kevin Larmer and Mike Harmon. Torrence got'his third of the night to give the Rebels a 5-4 lead before Scott Heasman tied {t for the MoJacks with help from Matt Pyke. From that point on the score see-sawed back and forth with the middle frame ending all knotted up at sevens. / Dallas Baker notched two for the Rebs with Todd Dennis and Geer responding for the MoJacks. The third period was just 38 seconds old when Rebels Doug Greenly made it 8-7 followed by Leslie for the MoJacks at 2:34. At 14:18, Torrence nailed down his 4th of the game to give his team the 9-8 lead Barkwell forced overtime at 17:09 with his third as he cashed in a rebound from the front of the net. . Overtime settled nothing and both teams snuck away with a single point. Coach Carnegie said his charges appeared to "lose their focus" in the second period as they allowed the Techstars down Manvers "The Techstar Bantams v played'Manvers for the first time this year on Sunday, October 15. Manvers had a hard time bringing the puck into the Stars end as all the forwards - from Port demonstrated outstanding back checking the entire game. The stars played an excellent game, keeping the opposition under five goals. They achieved the + win and would have let in less goals if it wasn't for some minor lapses and questionable refereeing. "They were sneaking in behind us," he said, addifg the fact the MoJacks had not seen action in a week may have taken some of the edge off their game. SLAPSHOTS: Sophomore centre Chad Kearns will be lost to the MoJacks for a couple of months after suffering a bad break to his wrist in the second period when he was checked along the boards. I Hutchinson faced 34 Rebel shots in this game, while the MoJacks fired 24 at Lalande. Hutch has had better nights in the MoJack goal but he made a brilliant stop late in the game off a clear breakaway by Dallas Baker, and in the OT period he snared a puck Pee Wee House Emiels 5 - Larocque 1 This house league game featured good hockey with loads of end to end action.
