Members of the team are; Jill Pashley (Goalie), Rhea Baxter, Alicia Burgess, Kim Carrique, Katherine Cooke, Stacey Cunningham, Leanne Davison, Jennifer Hammond, Melissa Hooker, Ashleigh Murphy & Nicole Virtue. With only a couple of practices under their belt the team was anxious to "get their feet wet" and' set ar] a couple of Exhibition games before their league games started. E Finat Exhibition game wag. against Oshawa October 19th in Oshawa. ort Perry girls played's great game but came up short on a 4-3 win for Oshawa. Double = penalty minutes for the Port team had our girls ,working very hard, Port goals went to Rhea - 1 and Stacey - 2. Guaranteed great games between these two teams and everyone looks forward to the first league game between the two. Next game was to be Saturday October 21st vs Mississauga but it was unfortunately postponed. The girls played an Exhibition game Sunday October 22nd vs Pickering in Pickering.' This game the girls were ready and seemed more organized winning over a good Pickering team 4-2. Goals for Port were; Stacey from Alicia, Alicia from Kim, Jennifer from Rhea and Katherine and Leanne from Stacey and Melissa. The team's first league game was Sunday October 29th vs Pickering. This thes, tithe it was Pickering who and | 'seemed hot' determined to win which resulted in their win 5-3 over 'Port. Goalie .Jill played an outstanding game as did the Pickering goalie. Goals for Port go to Rhea, Rhea again assisted by Jennifer, and Stacey assisted by Alicia. Next game is Saturday November 4th in Whitby. This year will no doubt be filled with some great fast- passed games! The team is made up of a great bunch of girls with a great work ethic. Way to go girls! Its going to be a great season! Tween C lose a real squeaker The 'Guardian Tween 'C' * team coming off their first victory last week started this game a little shaky. Pickering took the opening free pass and scored on a long shot. Twenty-three seconds later they made it 2-0 and it looked like it was going to be a long game for our girls. But Shannon rebounded for the home team when she pounced on a loose ring in the Pickering zone and drove to the net to score our first marker. Just over a minute later Shannon found the net again on, a pass from Kelly. The visitors came back and scored two quick ones. Port working hard got one back when Shannon scored an unassisted goal, her third of the game. Pickering tweens rallied | when Sheena fed Sarah a | nice pass who made noly mistake. Shortly thereafter Alaina B. scored to tie it up assist going to Sarah. With less Maybe next timelll In our first match up of the season against Ops, Compton Cable played hard, but couldn't match the strong showing of the Ops team. Thank goodness for the quick eyes and fast han of Sam Bennett (30) and" Kyle Geer (1), or the score could have been a great deal higher than the way it ended up; 5-0 Ops. Despite the efforts of Matt Menear (9) and Craig Kehoe (12) Compton |, i couldn't manage to get on the board. Defensively, Hayley Campbell (16) | and Mitch Truax (10) tried'but Ops were just too fast and too precise. Maybe next time we'll "get em". than five minutes left in the period our girls took the lead for the first time in the game. Shannon, who was flying out there, scored her fourth on a nice solo effort. First period ended 6-5 in our favour. The second period was a very seesaw back and forth match. Our defence stopped many attacks and Alaina D. played steadier ! between the pipes. Port's forwards pressed and had numerous scoring opportunities but could not "beat the Pickering goalie. Unfortunately the visitors managed to slip two past our goalie and we came up a little short, final score 1- 6 for Pickering. After a slow start the Guardian Tweens seemed to come on like we know they can. With a few more practices this team will start to gel and improve "with every game. Next games are against Sunderland and Ennismore. _-- Sougog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 31, 1995 --33 4 With seven weeks of play passed already the Port Broomball League standings at this juncture of the season are very tight. Brooklin holds a , slim lead over the Swampers in the race for first place and third through fifth are separated by two points. In game one this past Sunday the Blackstock Brewers pulled off a minor upset as they downed the Homelife Swampers by a 4-2 margin. The Brewers held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period on goals by Tom Wotten, unassisted, and i Al Boumeester with help from Ron Wagg. The lone reply Ifor the Swampers came from the broom of Brian Robinson from Mike Healey. | From' thé opening faceoff of the second frame, Blackstock marched down and it was Neil Woodrow, from John Surette and Peter Wagg again making it a 2 goal lead. Midway through ! the period Robinson added his second of the game with Brian Pomeroy drawing the assist. With 2:02 to play Blackstock picked up their second! powerplay goal of the game off the broom of Ron Short from Wotten. The Brooklin Bruins managed to sneak past the Swampers in the league standings with a 4-1 win over The Framers Gallery. Rob Mason set up Luc Collard to get the ball rolling in the first period for the Bruins. In the dying. seconds of that period Wayne Tate, on a solo effort put Brooklin up by two. There was no , further scoring until with' just over' four minutes to play Murray Down, and Shawri Mitchell assisted on Roger Rouselle's tally. The Framer's answered this one with one of their own just a minute later as Scott McLeod tallied from Jim Weir and Glen Archibald. With 25 Brooklin leads Swamp seconds showing on the clock his own scoring. "The final game of the day avas a real squeaker With Trader. Sam's downing the Stouffville Scorpions to the tune of 2-1. It looked like the Scorpions had in' fact tied the game up in the dying moments only to have the officials rule it did not go in. round out the ~ Scoring for Trader's it was Mike O'Meara from Ken St. Amant and Les Allen on the first shift of the game just 38 seconds into play. Allen drew his second assist of the game on the final Trader's goal by Craig Leask. ' Before the first frame hadj ended the Scorpions had replied with their single marker off the broom of Dan VanLoon with Leo Pettipas drawing the assist, Both defenses tightened up in the second half thwarting * any more scoring opportunities. Tough luck for Goreski team at tournament in Madoe The Goreski PeeWees travelled to Madoc for their first tournament of the season. In the first game, Port was up against a strong skating Belleville team and lost the game by a 7-2 score. Port Perry goals were scored by Matt McGarry assisted by Billy Carr, and Matt McGarry's second goal assisted by Scott Duncan and Darren Royle. In the second game of the day, Deseronto was the competition for the red and white. With this win Port moved on to the*B" championship final game and their opposition was the team from Marmora. Port fell behind early in the game, but Matt Cracknell tied the score with assists going to Ian Garnett and Tyler Houthuys. Marmora scored again to take the lead in the first period, but once again Matt Cracknell scored his second goal of the game on a nifty pass from Mike Wadsworth to He the game at two. The goons: period was scoreless with good saves at both ends of the rink. In the third period Marmora scored early and took a 3-2 lead. Port never gave up and Joel Thompson scored from Adam Moynes and Scott Duncan to tie the game and send it into overtime, After five minutes of sudden death, the score was still tied. Five players from each team would now decide the game with a shoot-out. The'first two players from each team were blanked by outstanding goaltending, The néxt two shooters scored ad the shootout was tied at 2-2. With one chance for each team left, the pressure 'was on. Unfortunately Port lost on the final shot and Marmora won a very exciting hockey game.
