Vs ModJack goalie Paul Roberts was brillaint in 3-2 win over Uxbridge Bruins. Legionaires in hunt for top spot Port Peiry Legionaires played two league games this past week and came away with 3 out of a possible 4 , points, keeping them in the running for first place. The highlite of these points was tying Cobourg (currently in first) on their own pond after the "Legionaires" had already played 2 games previously that day in the Lindsay Tournament. The stage has been set for a final showdown between these two evenly ; matched teams, next * Saturday in Port Perry. The "Legionaires® took their "tired bodies" to Cobourg at 9:16pm on Friday, Jan. 5th, and part way through the first period, Jason Whitworth gave Port Perry a 1.0 lead, scoring a shorthanded goal on a 2-on- 1 break with Mark Blakely. Port Perry had numerous other scoring chances during the first but were unable to get another goal. Late in the first, Carl Evans, in net, stood his ground on, a Cobourg breakaway, turning the puck aside: Tim Jones hustled back hard to just bump the attacker's elbow to help Carl out. The second period opened with a flurry of opportunities for Dean VanCamp, Braden Tarbotton and matt MacMaster but Cobourg would not allow them another goal. However, at the 10 minute mark, Jason Whitworth made a perfect pass across the goal mouth where Danie Gray waiting to tip the puck fhe ark Blakely also assisted. two » goal lead could not withstand the pressure of the Cobourg attack however, and Cobourg potted one before the second iod ended. Unfortunately, Cobourg denied Port Perry a "flood" and the Legionaires were forced to take the ice immediately for the third period - despite probably needing a rest. Cobourg opened the third scoring their second goal to tie the game 2. 2. The Port Perry Legionaires did not give though the scored on a pewer play when David Justynski blasted a shot past the goalie (assist to Matt MacMaster) to give Port Perry a 3-2 lead. Cobourg would not be denied. As our tired troop tried to rally, Cobourg scored a third and final goal to end the game in a 3-all tie. Carl Evans was outstanding in net. A close and exciting game in the battle for first place. Stay tuned when the Legionaires host Cobourg on Sat. Jan. 13th at 5pm at the Scugog Arena. The previous night, Thurs. Jan. 4th, the PeeWee Legionaires travelled to Oshawa where they white- washed the hapless LNHL Blac! ks 9-1. The defence welcomed back Sean Jeffrey after an injury lay-off and Chris Monsma, in net, was well protected by his defence as he turned away shots directed at him. Two hat tricks were scored in this game. Dean VanCamp had a hat trick with assists by David Justynski (1), Matt MacMaster (1), Braden Tarbotton (1). Jason Whitworth had a natural hat trick and assists were recorded by Mark Blakely (3), Sean Jeffrey (1), Grant Hooker (1), and Tim Jones (1). Chris Skerratt rounded out the scoring with a goal on assists by Scott Brownson and Steve Wygerde. by John B. McClelland A stellar performan between the pipe: aul Roberts lifted the Port Perry MoJacks to a 8-2 victory over first place Uxbridge Bruins in Central Junior C Sunday night at the Scugog Areng. Roberts was chi 8 short of brilliant as he faced 42 shots and many were of the decidedly difficult nature. The Oshawa native has been hot in nets for the MoJacks recently, was a team rep in New Years Day all star gam®n Little Britain where he was named one of the game stars, and in something of an understatement said * after Sunday night's fine effort that he is "fairly satisfied" with the way things have been going for him in the cage. "The team played well in front of me tonight," he added, "despite the number of shots." At the other end of the rink, MoJacks mustered just 17 shots at Barry Crawford in the Bruins net, but they made the best of the chances presented. The teams traded goals in the first period as the League's top sniper Keith Leslie staked MoJacks to a 1-0 lead with help from Steve Barkwell and Matt Pyke. Mat Capson replied for the Bruins. Late in the second, Bruins took a brief lead when Jim Boyd converted a 2-1 break, but that held up less than two minutes as newcomer Derek Anderson displayed his deft scoring touch at 17:07. Anderson un-loaded with a low slap shot from the left hash marks that * beat Crawford cleanly. Trevor Bremnor and Kevin Vivian set him up on this play. With Roberts continuing his heroics through the third period (at one point the shots were 15-1 in the Bruins favour) Jeremy Geerggot what proved to be the game winner at 2:34. He was set up in the slot by Leslie and Todd Dennis and made no mistake with a quick shot to the corner of the cage for his fourth of the campaign. Bruins were coming off a 6-4 victory over Sutton Friday night on home ice that put them eight points up on the second place MoJacks. Their lead went down by two following Sunday's win by Port Perry. MolJacks were forced to play much of the game without Cory Bricknell and Gavin Cochrane who were tossed afgthe same time midway through the first period. Cochrane and Loughery #Graham of the Bruins were engaged in a scrap and Bricknell got nailed for being "third man in" when he draped#an arm around the Bruins. He ended up with a game misconduct as did Cochrane and their absence left coach Chic Carnegie with just four defensemen for the rest of the game. Matt Pyke, Scott JAeasman, Dusgne Empringhman and Jeremy Geer picked up the slack admirably. SLAPSHOTS: After enjoying nearly a week off, the schedule gets a bit sticky 'for the MoJacks as they have four games in almost as many days. Wednesday night they are in Little Britain for a tilt with rival Merchants at 8:00 PM. On Friday, they are in Uxbridge for an 8:30 start apd on Saturday night host Lakefield at 7:30 PM. Sunday afternoon they journey to Sutton to meet the Ice at 4:30 PM. "With 12 games left to play, MoJacks stjll have a chance to finish first in the League. Head coach Chic Carnegie said the key will be to win all three of Midget B travels to Port The Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget "B" Islanders travelled to Port Dover on January 6th to take part in a local tournament there and although they didn't qualify to get into the finals they'put on a very good showing and came up just a bit short. The Islanders first game of the day was an early one against Tavistock but it didn't seem as though the Isles were quite awake for. this one. Tavistock scored twice in the first and once in the second to take a commanding 3-0 lead but then in the third the Isles woke up. Ashley Van Shelvan scored two goals to narrow the score to 3-2. Picking up the assists on his goals were Aaron Levy and Trevor Smith. The Islanders could have easily won this game as Chris Drury ripped a wrist shot from the point that dinged the 'crossbar and Dave Kamminga bounced one off the post from close in but as in previous games the iron would be the Islanders foe as it would make two big stops on them. Brian Bickmore was in net for this game and came up with a strong effort in a losing cause. The Islanders second game of the tournament was against Blenheim who was without a doubt the strongest team in the Isles division. The first period went scoreless as neither team could get anything past the others goalie. Then in the second period the Islanders seemed to let up a bit and Blenheim jumped on them firing in two goals to take a 2-0 lead. The second goal seemed to wake the Islanders back up and they responded with a goal of their own as Dave Kamminga tucked in a loose puck with Adam Hunter and Adam Smith assisting on the play to make it now a 2-1 game. The Islanders opened the third period yp short handed and BI im took advantage of it to once again open up a two goal lead making it now 3-1. This really took the wind out of the Islanders sails and they just 'gfuldn't get back in it. With time running out and their goalie on the bench in favour of the extra attacker the Islanders valiantly tried to get one back but it would go for not as Blenheim would salt the game firing one into an empty net and sealing the game with a score of 4-1. Doug Short was in goal for the Islanders and although he came up with another strong game it just wasn't enough. The Islanders third game of the day was against the hometown Port Dover team and the Islanders were hungry for a win. This was definitely the Isles best effort of the tourney 'and any time during the game that they faltered it would be Brian Bickmore in the net to make a big stop to keep the team in the game and give them a lift to pack-up the pace again. The Islanders looked good in all parts of the the game right from good penalty killing by Gavin Baxter and Todd Parry to good defensive coverage in the Isles own end by Chris Drury, Noah Dorland, Adam Hunter, Trevor Smith and Mike Morden. The Islanders also had strong two way play from wingers Ryan Puckrin, Scott Heffern, Aaron Levy, Adam Smith and Dave Kamminga while the centre was #dequately patrolled by Ashley Van ¥ As remaining games against Uxbridge. He would like to ~finish first to get home ice advantage through the playoff rounds. Carnegie was pleased with the win Sunday over the Bruins, praising the work 'of the four defensemen who carried the load much of the game. for oberts' performance in the nets, he said "he is really in control of his game right now." | With Roberts holding the hot hand right now, Carnegie said he's not sure if he will stick to rotating his two netminders. Rick Hutchinson is slated to get the call Wednesday night in Little Britain. Playoffs are just about a month away. The topvfour * teams in the League will advance to the playoff rounds, with the first place finisher taking on'the fourth place squad and the second and third place teams meeting in the other round. In MoJacks favour in their bid for first is the fact that eight of their 12 games are on home ice where they have lost just once so far this season. Don't forget the game this week at the Scugog Arena is Saturday (Jan. 13) at 7;30 PM with the Lakefield Chiefs in town. Dover Shelvan, Matt Phillips.and Todd Parry. All of these things put together meant a 3-2 win for the Islanders. Scoring for the Islanders were Matt Phillips tipping in a wicked Adam Hunter blast form the point, Gavin Baxter connecting from Todd Parry and Mike Morden and finally Mike scoring one himself with Ashley. Van Shelvan setting him up. Because of the point system used in: the tournament where you get a point for each period you win and two points for winning the game our Islanders came up just a bit short of making it*into the "B* pionship. All in all however it was a good ament as the team did fet progressively better as the day went on and they learned the kind of effort it takes to win and that they are capable of putting forth that kind of an effort. In closing we - would like to thank Marilyn Puckrin for the great homemade cookies (MMMMM) and Lloyd Morden for supplying the spectators with peanuts (what a mess, shells * everywhere). Via
