In photo-refractive keratotomy (PRK), a fine layer of the cornea is vaporized by-a laser to flatten the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) to correct the vision. However, this is considered to be an experimental procedure by Health and Welfare Canada, and has not yet been y perfected ially for far-sigl ess. The best candidates for surgery "have low to moderate nearsightedness with minimal astigmatism. Patients must be at least 19 years old without any significant eye pathology such as corneal scarring, severe dry eye or viral infection. As well, the patient should be in good general health, and not suffer from systemic conditions such as diabetes, pregnancy or rheumatoid arthritis. Patients should also have $2,000. per eye to afford PRK. PRK itself takes only 5 - 10 minutes; the laser application takes less than 60 seconds. As the patient fixates on a target, the laser reshapes the superficial 10% of the cornea removing tissue the thickness of a human hair. The final prescription may take 3 to 6 months to stabilize. Approximately 90% of good candidates achieve' 20/40 vision - this is the minimum for driving without glasses; however, glasses or contacts may still be required to achieve 20/20. PRK does NOT correct age-related loss of focus (presbyopia), thus, reading glasses will still be required after age '45. As with any y surgery there is risk involved, although the risk is minimal. Loss of visual sharpness occurs in 1% of patients, but nobody has ever gane blind. Other drawbacks are post-operative pain, night glare and comeal haze all of which improve as the comea. heals. There is also the question of long term effect on the cornea to withstand trauma or cataract surgery. Not as many patients as estimated are having the procedure, hence, the bombardment of ads by laser centres. . Dr. Workman counsels patients on their eligibility for "PRK eh the risks involved.
