You must dress appropriately for the weather. Two factors , must be considered: - insulation and protection of the skin that is exposed to cold air. Sustained exposure of the. skin to frigid temperatures presents a risk of frostbite and freezing of the skin and underlying tissues. Symptoms of the condition, which primarily affects the hands, feet, nose and ears includes loss of sensation and changes in skin colour. To help prevent frostbite, consider what parts of the body that are left exposed by winter gxercise gear and the clothing required to cover these areas. Dressing in layers, of course offers insulation and flexibility. Wearing gloves, a hat that covers the ears, and two pairs of socks serves that dual purpose. Once outdoors, you must remain alert to weather conditions and the amotint of time spent outdoors. Several breaks also should be planned throughout the day to get into some warm shelter. In the excitement of participation in outdoor exercise or sports you may not notice changes in your body that can be indicative of frostbite. Anyone who experiences a significant loss of feeling or changes in skin colour should get into a warm, dry environment as soon as possible. Another important aspect is that extra electrolyte intake considered essential during warm weather exercise, is also important during cold weather. The liquids help maintain this balance of electrolytes, salts that are lost when the body swyats and ky inhaling 'cold, dry air. Plain water is' generally sufficient to maintain this balance, but sports drinks may also be helpful for this purpose. A word of caution, under no circumstances should alcohol be used to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. Drinking alcohol does not help warm up or protect people from the cold. They do contribute to dehydration and also increase the risk of injury by blurring judgement and decreasing the perception of the cold. Smoking also adds to the danger, because nicotine increases the risk of frostbite. COMFORT CRUMBLE (This can be servéd with frozen yogurt or ice milk, if you are concerned about fat intake.) The Health Department is currently investigating @ confirmed case of {easles in an elementary school. "Outbreaks of this sort will continue)" says Marion Megesi, Sup- ervisor of Public Health Nursing, "until all Durham children are protected by two doses of measles vaccine." Children receive measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine after their first birthday. This protects 90-95% from developing the disease. A second dose protects virtpally all children. "Bedause measles com- plications include pneumonia, brain damage and death, we want the best protection available", says Megesi. Public health nurses . will begin giving 102,000 Durham Region children measles vacciné in L February. Students will be given immunization consent forms and fact sheets to take home from school this month. Parents are asked to sign them and return them to school as soon as possible. This second dose of straight measles vaccine will not be available through your family doctor. Legislation will be changed to require {Wo doses of measles vaccine as of September 1996.
