Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 23,1996 --19 + Gritty MoJacks win a humdinger in OT by John B. McClelland A healthy dose of old- fashioned grit was much in evidence Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as the Port Perry MoJacks defeated league-leading Uxbridge Bruins 2-1 in overtime. "It was a gutsy performance, coming back the way they did," said a smiling head coach Chic Carnegie moments after Ryan Ridgway had popped the winner about midway through the five minute sudden death period. "I'm very happy, glad to get the win," said Carnegie, praising the work of the entire team, but especially his blue line corps of Cory Bicknell, Matt Pyke, Kevin Vivian and Jeremy Geer who Kelth Leslie (left) scored late in the third to send the game into overtime and Ryan Ridgway won it for the MoJacks when he made no mistake on a backhand to down the Bruins 2-1 in what was the best Junior C tilt at the Scugog Arena this season. Fast paced game ends in 5-5 draw Exciting action at the arena Friday night as the Bantam House League guys got together for some fast hockey. Murphy Irvine of IGA started the scoring at 11:20 on a beautiful shot passed from Kam Coo) Wade Ritchie answered | Emmerson's on a breakaway at 8:09. Wade came in alone again at 4:15 but goalie Chris Thompson robbed him and made the save for IGA. 15 seconds later, Nick Ostifachuk of IGA and Tim Wray of Emmerson's shook hands.on the way to the penalty box. So we high sticked each other, we're still _ friends. Good sportsmanship guys. Period 2, the action just got better. Emmerson took the lead at 10:42 on.a goal from Erik Troan assisted by Wade. IGA tied it 2-2 at 10:28 on a fast shot from Joel VanCamp with assists to Nick and Reid (McTaggart. Joel's Gramma and Grampa Calick came all the = way from Mississauga on a stormy night to see this. Emmerson took over the tad again at 4:05 as Jamie Page sent a nice pass to Wade. Into the third and IGA tied it this time on a beautiful shot form defenceman Mark Delaney all the way from the blue line. Thanks to passes from Reid and Chad Lance, Mark's still got the smile on his face. IGA took over 4-3 at 9:14 when Chad and Joel went in on Emmerson goalie Chris McLaughlin and Chad popped. it over Chris' shoulder and into the net. But Emmerson was pressing again, Scott Cunningham passed it up to Wade who in turn gave it to Erik. It didn't go in thé first time but Erik got his own rebound and- scored at 8:25. Tied again 4-4. A quick rush up ice' for Emmersons resulted in Wade picking up his 3rd goal for a hat trick. Scott and Jamie Page picked up assists. Chad Lance was determined not to lose this close of a game and at 2:10 he took a pass from Pete McKitterick and .in it went. A 5-5 tie to end the game and a great effort from both teams. From start to finish, this one was fast-paced and hard hitting, but both teams struck strictly to hockey, with MoJacks taking five minors and the Bruins four. Bruins Darryl Whitlock gave his team a 1-0 lead midway through the first on a blistering slap shot from 25 feet in front of MoJack netminder Paul Roberts. It looked like that might Ube all the visitors would need to go home with two points as the score stayed 1-0 until Bricknell and Keith Leslie teamed up with 3:10 left in regulation. Leslie won the draw deep in the Bruin zone and fed the puck back to Bricknell at the left point. He hesitated just slightly before firing a low shot through a screen in front of "'petminder Barry Crawford. Leslie managed to get a stick on it for his 41st of the campaign. MoJacks might have been content to come away from this one with a tie and the single point, but Ridgway, Ryan Speake and Paul Kelly had other ideas. Kelly and Speake worked the puck free in the Bruin zoe and Ridgway made no mistake from 15 feet out as he beat Crawford cleanly with a rising back- hand to the top shelf. The goal touched off quite a MoJack celebration at centre ice, and it moved the team to within three points of the Bruins in the battle for first placé in the Central League. Roberts turned in Isles tie Markam The Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget 'B' Islanders played host to Markham on , January 17th and even though it was an exhibition game, the Islanders, knowing that they may play against Markham in their first round of playoffs, came out flying. They were determined to send a message to Markham that they were ready for the playoffs. The first period was end to end action with the Islanders holding a slight edge in the play. Their hard work was rewarded as Aaron Levy converted on a nicz passing play from Gavin Baxter and Todd Parry. The Islanders got a little lax in their own end leaving a man uncovered out front and bingo, the game was tied up at one apiece. The Islanders continued to press on and Gavin Baxter gave the Isles back the lead with Trevor Smith assisting on the play. Once again Markhagfi™tied things up as poor coverage in front of the Islanders goal cost them again. The second period had Markham take a 3-2 lead on somewhat of a gift goal but this wasn't going to stop the Islanders. With a man in the penalty box Ashley Van Shelvan made a nice solo effort to tie the game up at three apiece. The third period continued to be excellent hockey by both teams with both getting their chances to score but unable to get one in. Finally it ' was the Islanders who would take the lead as matt Phillips fired one in with N WIN SHES0 OFF FOR WINDSHIELD DEDUCTIBLE with most insurance companies (up to $50.) at time of purchase with this coupon WE ALSO RECOVER BOAT TOPS & SEATS 139 Water: St., Port Perry ® Free Mobile Service ® All Work Guaranteed SENAEEEENEERRENERNENEENNEERRENRNNENERNNENRENROEESD Adam Hunter and Dave Kamminga picking up the assists The Islanders couldn't hold the lead' however as Markham tied things up in the dying seconds with their goalie on the bench in favor of the extra attacker. Final score 4-4 in a very entertaining game. Doug Short and Brian Bickmore shared the net duties for this game and "both came up with a lot of big stops. The Islanders will now start on their quest for the All Ontario Championship as they take on Lindsay in their opening round of the playoffs. First game is in Port Perry January 26th with a 9:15pm start time. another strong game between the pipes 28 shots, many of the tough variety. His GAA now is 2.5, outstanding for Junior C hockey. Bruins have been in a bit of a slump lately, losing 6- 5 to Lakefield Friday night. With five games left (four on home jce) MoJacks certainly have a shot at overtaking the Bruins who have a game in hand. MolJacks are, also looking warily over their shoulder at the Little Britain Merchants who have 48 points, three behind Port Perry, but with four games in hand. On Thursday at the Scugog Arena, MoJacks doubled the Bgbcaygeon Bullets 8-4 with Mike Pigeau netting a pair to lead the scoring parade. Singles came from Bricknell, Leslie, Hurlburt, Stirling, Ridgway and Pyke with his 8th of the campaign. The Stirling and Ridgwily goals came while the team was killing a penalty. Bullets scored three power play goals in the third to prevent the game from becoming a total blow-out. SLAPSHOTS: Juniot C fans should see a good one at the Scugog Arena this coming Thursday evening at 8:30 PM. The Little Britain Merchants are in town for the last meeting of the regular season, and they have had the MoJacks number all year winning three of five. On Saturday night MoJacks hit the road to Brighton for their last out of town game of the schedule. There is no Junior C hockey in Port this coming (Super Bowl) Sunday. Can't say enough, about the play, of Pyke, Bricknell, Geer and Vivian against the Bruins. They were superb as regular blue liners Gavin Cochrane (three game suspension) Duane Empringham (bone chip in the foot) and Scott Heasman (stretched knee ligaments) are out of the lineup. Hudson from the Port Juveniles saw spot duty and turned in a fine effort. Bricknell showed his dedication as he attended the funeral of his grandfather in Toronto late Sunday afternoon, then rushed to the Arena in time for the opening faceoff. Head coach Chic Carnegie feels the up- coming Thursday night game with the Merchants is extremely important. He "badly wants a win to set a tone for the playoffs in which Merchants and MoJacks could be first round opponents. MoJacks have not had a strong game against Merchants all season, he said. . Lakefield Chiefs are aking a run for the fourth and final playoff as they nipped Uxbridge 'Friday night and Campellford on Saturday. MoJacks record to date is 51 points on 23 wins, five ties and nine losses. Game time this Thursday night is 8:30 PM, and it - should be a dandy. The Pineridge Sports Mixed Open Bonsplel at the Port Perry Curling Club was captured by the rink of (from left) skip Steve Foster, Gale Ballard, Terry Howsman and Sharon Faster. The team ran up a total of 45 ppints over three games and that was three better tign the runner-up squad skipped by Bert Hutcheon, also frém the Port Petry club.
