1 ¥ FIFTY At 79, Elma still bowling strong by Heather McCrae For over 45 years Elma Vernon's been bowling Monday nights at Centennial Lanes in Port Perry. Since retiring from Valu Mart a few years ago, she's also been a regular on a Wednesday afternoon league. Last fall a heart ailment put her in the hospital for a week, forcing her to take a short absence from the bowling lanes. Other than this illness Elma, 79, has been in good health most of her life. "1 thought it was perfect up until last October" she said. Having followed doctor's orders, she's now in good health again and, since Christmas, has been back bowling twice a week again. Keeping active seems to be a natural part of Elma's lifestyle. When she's not rolling the balls you'll often find her at home knitting or tatting. "I like to do something with my hands when I'm watching the hockey game" she said. especially fond of is figure skating. She was president of the Port Perry Figure Skating Club in the early sixties when local skaters Richard Stevens, Anna Forder and David Porter were competing, on their way towards the Olympics. Reading is a favourite pastime too. She loves getting into a good book and is especially fond of jig saw puzzles. Currently she's working on a 2000 piece puzzle her family gave her. Gardening is another one of Elma's favourite hobbies. "You name it and I've grown it" she chuckles. "I got everything off last fall except the brussels sprouts and they're still out there" Being a member of the Port Perry United Church, she also belongs to the Scugog Shuffleboard Club over the summer. Her daughter, Marianne Free, and sons, Robert, John and Peter have all brought her a great deal of joy. She's a grandmother to seven, and a great - grandmother. Matter - of - factly, she says she was brought up in a good Christian home "where we never had a lot of anything, but always had enough."
