wm» 14 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 30, 1996 Ontario Bonoarvolivas breaking promises To the Editor: Redently, we have seen some very trolling stories outlining théonservative cutbacks which Mr. Hodgson, MPP Victoria - Haliburton said we would never see under his government. Mr. Hodgson offers little assurance when he tells us he "speculates" Ross will remain open. At the same time, Ross Memorial is saying that layoffs are A for myself, I just can't imagine Lindsay without our Hospital, properly equipped, and properly staffed. Other news stories are -speculating that money could be saved by having the OPP take over policing in Lindsay as in other municipal jurisdictions. While the OPP has an excellent police service, leave our municipal service alone. The Lindsay Police Station has an established tradition of service to this community. Members of the Lindsay Service deserve our support. Our entire school system is also under the attack of mindless cutbacks. None of this would be taking place if the Conservatives were true to their word. I am still in possession of + the campaigm video Mr. Hodgson had delivered to my home during the last election. So there is no misunderstanding on exactly what was said and shown in the video, I will quote it verbatim. "The second point in the Common Sense Revolution is to set priorities and cut non-priority spending by 6 billion dollars. Here, Mike and Chris db something revolutionary. They set priorities for government with guaranteed funding for these priorities and then cut back in other areas to make good on their guarantee. The priorities are: * Preserving Our Health Care; * Maintaining Law & Order; * Guaranteed Funding & Standards Classroom. With funding guaranteed on priority areas they plan a 20% reduction in other government spending areas. In simple terms this means their plan will cut six billion dollars in spending while returning 4 billion dollars to you through the tax rebate." These promises made to all of us before the last election generated a sense of optimism within our community resulting in widespread support for the Conservative Party. The recent actions of our government, however, have transformed that sense of optimism into a sense of betrayal. : By reducing transfer payments to municipalities om an unconditienal basis, the government has provided local governments with the power to arbitrarily slash our most trusted emérgency services to dangerous levels. for the Since coming to power, the Conservative Party has been boasting about how well it has kept the promises mide during the Election.. The reality however, is that the Conservatives are raping the three key areas they promised would remain fully funded. Every citizen who cares about our health care, our local police service, and our schools "should be calling, writing, and faxing Chris Hodgson. We all need to tell him that we are angry as hell over his failure to live up to the promises he made to us prior to the election. It is us, as citizens who put him in power based on these same promises. If Mr. Hodgson has any sense of decency or integrity he must either come good on his promises or resign. Mr. Hodgson may be reached at his constituency office at 324 - 6654. You may write to him c/o 2 King Street, Lindsay, Ontario K9V 1C5 #4 or Fax him in Toronto at (416) 314 - 2216. Lyn Chapman R.R.3 Little Britain, Pot holes and bilingualism - To the Editor: Why is there a deafening silence about bilingualism? Mike Harris is cutting all kinds.of programs to save money. Cancelling bilingualism would take a bigger bite out of tifé deficit than anything Mr. Harris could propose. I have suggested this to both Mr. O'Toole and Mr. Harris -- but they remain silent Remember; - Bilingualism in Ontario costs us in excess of $1 Billion annually. - Only 3% of Ontarians have French as their home language. - Official language promotion costs Ontarians gver $11 Million a year. - Ontarians recently spent $7.4 Million for a french school for 109 students and $4.7 Million for one to house 112. -Ontarians will spend $15 Million over the next 5 years for a francophone college for 150 students Would you rather have well maintained roadways, or pot - with french signs overhead? holed, snow - covered highways Or you could have a smaller police force, but your drivers license application would be bilingual.
