. wp 6 -- Sougog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 19, 1996 pr a pL: LETTERS To, THE Eviron 4 Teenagers should 'hang on to your hormones!" To the Editor: t Regarding the defeat of the infamous document Reduce The Risk,,I would like to say that as a Nurse and a 14- year member of the Family Life Committee / Durham Board it is apparent that the agenda is the sexualization of our teens. If "accyrate" information was honestly the goal then vulnerable, trusting teens would have been told the truth about condoms and their inability to prevent the spread of diseases like Herpes and H.P.V. genital warts; the most prevalent sexually - transmitted disease among youth' today. As these viruses are found on the external genital area, buttocks and thighs and contract skin- * to-skin, they do not éome under thesoften-thought omnipotent protection of the condom. Nothing short of hip-waders would work. The sad reality is that Herpes and H.P.V. are incurable, often leading to cervical i ber in girls and have killed more women'to date than AIDS yet Reduce The Risk failed to divulge this vital informatjon, to teens. Parents were left/ scratching their heads as to why. Public Health's activity on the Family Life Committee was also shocking, Their representative cautioned the Board not to include the real risk factor of condoms as teens might npt use*them. As condoms are foundational to Reduce' The Risk, the collusion with Public Health was" obviously a "conspiracy of silence" to protect both their ~ programs; an insidious bglrayal of public trust. The good news is that 74% of teens by Grade 9, according to the Canada Youth and Aids Study by Queens, are still virgins "and 52% by Grade 11: The majority are not having auto glass SINCE Windshields, Boat Tops, Seats and Complete Upholstery, Sun Roofs, Tonneau Covers, ORT PERRY &trim itd. 981 Ca Call for Details 985-8507 CLUES DOWN 1. Smart choice-in a world of Aids and incurable STD's. So why wouldn't our Trugtees want to affirm these teens in their position of Abati i programs have "proved ineffective" as stated in the Canada Youth and Aids Study. After a strong Anti-drug Program there is ly a small fringe hing them how and why to say, "no" to gexual | pressure with refusal "skills and assertiveness training techniques. Good Abstinence based programs do not ignore the sexually active. Instead they challenge those who have experimented with sex to rethink - their {position on sexual matters and invite them back to chastity. With the popular concept of virginity" teens are.now free to choose to go in a new direction and many do. So effective have these programs been that the Clinton Administration « * has allocated $400 million to Abstirlence Training. There is nothing unique about Reduce The Risk. There are literally hundreds of similar programs put out by the Sex-Ed Industry and these RED A N SALE All Prices Sl. XLT 4x4, 4 door, loaded. Balance new car warranty. Low km. - $14,000. But do we change the message and make the lowest denominator the norm and teach the whole class "How To Do Dyugs Safely?" No, we do not compromise the message. For those teens who after a strong Abstinence Program insist on 'experimenting with sep, then they need one-to-one counselling. The worst message a teen could getis 1) Safe-sex is achievable; 2) Everybody is doing. it; and common 3) Responsible adults 'expect you to do it. How much revenue does an abstinent teen generate? A teen that is not sexually active does \ not' néed spermicides, jellies or foam; condoms, L.U.D.'s, birth-control pills, or Abortions! (Planned Parenthood grossed $21.6 million in 1986 performing abortions). Could . promiscuous teens be seen as a potentially new lucrative market? Could the real issue be about protecting careers and pharmaceutical profits? For Public Health and curriculum writers the sexually active provide a "career" in condom donning. Does Public: Health support ALL teénagers? Ask to see their Abstinence Program. It is woefully non-existent. Public" Health teaches FOR sexual © ctivity, pot Testraint, heir many Sex- Trade. Showd set up'in hig school auditoriums Fis demonstrate that Sex Education has become Sex Invitation; teens exploited for a buck. Perhaps now, with the Public Health 'dofument safely expunged from the system our Board can move in a new direction. Our students are worth it. "Hang on to your hormones". Mary Johansen, | Registered Nurse Port Perry, Ontario Death of friend Sigrid still felt a year later To the Editor: It was a year ago ody, s a Saturday night -*March _ 18th, 1995, that I-lost my dear friend. I wrote then of my sense of loss; of grief, at her passing. It" was a senseless death, as so many are, and one that could easily have been avoided. Her name was Sigrid Boehm and she died as a result of careless smoking and subsequently a fire that engulfed her home. I'm aware now, that she, like many others, did not have a smoke detector in her home. I have looked around our ~ community - Scugog - and I have discovered that there are many Seniors living here. Many are without i . family, and whether the cause is fear or pride, a good number keep to themselves. How many of us don't - know our neighbours? A big change frorh yester year when our kitchens were a gathering spot, for neighbours and friends. I guess it's a 8ign of the times that we live in, but I for one would like to take a step back - when community meant caring for one another. I know times are tough - I've had my share of woes this year, but many of us, myself included are still capable of reaching out. We can still take the time to share a smile, or a cup of coffee, an offer here or there to change a light bulb or install a smoke alarm, won't do #hything but good. I think it's time to look around and readjust our priorities. Let's reaffirm our humanity, by helping those less fortunate, or elderly or lonely. I would ike to help establish a "team of caregivers" to take an honest and open approach to looking after the deniors - in our community. 'If anyone is as concerned as | am, I would like to hear" from them. Perhaps together as a group, we can do what one could not.
