Q, gog Citizen -- wy rv oy April 23, 1996-- 25 EA Famed swimmer has inspired words for students - "Don't ever allow anybody to put limitations on what you cah do. Reach for your dreams, believe in yourself anll- you will accomplish the impossible." That was the heart of the message from Canada's best known marathon swimmer Vicki Keith- Munro in an inspiring and~ swimming, is the only informative hour-long talk to senior students at S.A. Cawker School last ¥iday, morning. And if anybody should know about achieving the" impossible, it is Vicki Keith. She is the holder of 14 world records for marathon i OH BOY... IT WAS A BIG Jou! T TOOK A LONG MME, BUT, INALLY I'VE person to swim across all the Great Lakes, has braved the frigid waters of Juan de Fucg, sharks in the Catalina Channel and stinging jellyfish in the English Channel. And her exploits in the waters of the globe have raised an "incredible $800,000 for Variety' Village in Scarborough and its Sunshine Pool for the physically disabled. Now retired.from long distance swimming, Vicki divides her time between coaching disabled children in the pool at Variety Village and as .a motivational speaker. She waved her usual speaking fee for the appearance at Cawker School, accepting only enough to cover her travel expenses. Vicki told the young and very attentive audience of grades 5-8 students that she gqt her first personal inspiration at the terider age of six. It was*at her first ballet recital and the teacher told Vicki's mother "your daughter walks Hike a % horse." "I felt so horrified and so embarrassed," she told the* audience. But she had an answer for those un-kind remarks. "You can't reach your goals all by . yourself, y "I walked up'to that teacher and said to.her 'If I walk like" a horse, then it has the heart of a white stallion." She applied that same personal philosophy to the challenge of long distance swimming, which she turned to because she loved to swim "but was not very fast." The tougher the chhllen "the more resolved was to accept and conquer that challenge. When friends scoffed at the idea of somebody swimming across all the Great Lakes she jhst told GOSH MR. FIX IT... | DIDN'T KNOW HAD CRW FURNITURE herself "yes, I can do that. I believed in myself." And she did it, breaking the challenge down into its smallest components (one lake at a time starting with the smallest Erie and finishing with the Lake Superior). In the straight of Juan de Fuca, the water was sogold her body temperature "dropped to 30 degrees, perilously jclose to the fatal level; in the English Chanrief she" was stung by jellyfish that caused excruciatingipain, in the" Catalina ghannel, , of California, a six foot shark passed underneath her, arid in Sydney Harbour, she refused to swim in a protective steel cage designed to keep Great White Sharks at bay. In her long distance swims, she fought nausea from water pollution and hallucinations from lack of sleep which caused hér to imagine a golf course and patio stones and the bottom of Lake Ontario and an often present "brick wall" right in front of her. While conquering her WE ? f personal goals was one thing, -shg was also inspired by the children of Variety Village. © During her address to the students she constantly reminded them to set. their own goals and stick to them. Don't be deterred by those who say .it"can't be done or any, Jother/"minor irritations." Vicki also paid dribute eH her family for their support in her endeavotrs and t the work of her crew who accompanied her on all the long distance swims. "It's so very important to haye this support. You can't reach your goals all by yourself," she said. She is an inspiring and dynamic speaker, and she' ¢ : obviously had the: un- divided attention of this young audience. When, she sked for questions, hundreds of young arms shot up. She answered dozens of questions for another 20 minutes and then signed dozens of autographs. ' Her appearance at the school last Friday was part of Career Week. " N SYel{[gle] Tol | AAT S ToY I=) Time to advertise your services in The Citizen Service Directory.
