Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 14, 1996-- 3 Are you up for Canoe the Nonquon, June 1? On June 1, Dan Robert will be doing something he's never done before. *Early in the morning, he'll jump into a canoe on the Nonquon River and several hours later will triumphantly paddle to shore at the Port Perry waterfront. Dan and his father-in-law Calvin"Rippin of Oakwood Dan Robert will be.entering Canoe the Nonquon June 1 for the first time and he would like to challenge other rookles to do the same and help support the Scugog Shores Museum. See story. are entering Canoe the Nongquon for the first time ever. "I camoe about once a year and have never done any long distance canoeing," he told the Citizen last week. But Dan is already looking forward to the challenge of Canoe the Nonquon which will celebrate its 28th anniversary June 1, making it the longest running canoe race of its kind in the province. Dan is the curator for the Scugog Shores Museum, so he knows that all money raised goes for a great cause--to support the Museum as it has each year for the last 28. . He's issuing a challenge to others in the community to get involved this year, pick up a paddle, find a "tanoe and enter thig event which has developed into something of a special tradition in Scugog over the years. Organizers especially would like to see some new paddlers hit the waters of the Nonquon on June 1. They stress the event is a race only for those who want to make it a race. There are numerous categories for the casual paddler who just want to complete the course at their own pace. Dan says he and his father-in-law will not be doing any special trainjng to get in shape fot th paddle on June 1 down the Nonquon to Lake Scugog and then down the lake to the Port Perry waterfront where refreshments and a crest wait the finishers. Ken Gadsden, on the other hand is a crafty veteran of the Nonquon. This year, paddling with son Dan, will be his third and they are really looking forward to it. 'The Ward 3 councillor also told the Citizen he does not have any special Scugog training regimen. "But once we hit the water, we work hard to get a respectable time." ¢ He says he and his son are contemplating whether to enter the men's competitive class this year. They pack no special provisions for the race-- just staples like salmon salad sandwiches, fresh fruit and Gatorade, and Ken said the paddle really is not that difficult. "lI was surprised. The first time I kept waiting for the cramps and the blisters to hit, but they didn't," hé noted. (Maybe it's all that basketball in building go up sharply in The value of building permits in Scugog more than tripled in April compared to the same month last year, the first , sign that the construction slump in the Township may be easing. ) Spurred by 11 permits by Ribcor Developments for new single, family homes in ~ Victorian Village, the value of building in April was $1.9 million, compared with $589,000 in permits one year ago. Most of April's activity was in single family homes with 18 permits having a total value of just over $1.8 million. So far this year ,in Scugog, there have been permits issued for 21 new homes with a value of $2.2 million, compared with just three for the first four months in 1995 with a value of just $150,000. The value of all building \ "the winter months that keeps him in shape) As for sage advice for a couple of rookies. like Dan Robert and his father-in- law, Ken had this to say: "make sure you sit in the stern so your partner can't see whether you're doing your ghare of the paddling." Registration forms and pledge sheets are now available. Keep in mind that all money raised goes. to support the Scugog Shores Historical Museum on Scugog Island."For information on registration call Joan Scott at 925- 7014. permits April permits issued by Scugog so far this year stands at $2.7 million. From January to April last year, the value was less than half that amount at, $1.2 million. If this trend continues through*1996, it should mean good news for local contractors and suppliers who have been feeling the pinch in the downturn of construction activity in Scugog for the last several years.
