I' In Scugog Township there is a small number of children who, because of special needs, require the help of a qualified support person or supervisor daily on a one-to-one basis. If these children go to camp, it's necessary for trained support people to accompany them. Last year, on behalf of these children and their families, Central Seven Association for Community Living was able to get funds from the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) thus allowing a co-ordinator and/or support workers to assist these children at camp so they could benefit from social-recreational experiences. But, this year, due to numerous eutbacks in MCSS funding, the money is not available. When staff of the Northern Durham Family Network (NDFN) met with Scugog Council earlier this year seeking funding to pay for such support people, their request was turned down tod, again due. to lack of capital. . "They (council) thought it was a good idea and were supportive of my'request, but didn't have the funds" Donna Herold, the family network's ' co-ordinator said. But, through word of mouth, the pedple on the Seagrave Parks Board heagd about the plight of the NDFN and took action by dohating money to pay for the special training of a support person. This, money is made available through activities of the Parks Board and the concession booth, not from the Township. "It's up to the parents to detide which camp they want their child to attend and pay the registration costs" Mrs. Herold told the Citizen, but getting a qualified support person will be looked after through money provided by the Parks Board. "It's a wonderful feeling: to find resources within our community" she said. She hopes other parks bpards and sports teams "be supportive of their plight and offer to pay for developmentally, challenged young people. going to a very good cause and | said it was a unanimous decision from board members to help. All support people will be taught CPR and other spdcial training from qualified personnel. Mrs. Herold can bel, contacted at Central Seven (985-8511) or at her home, 985-9872, if a group would like to help out for this worthy cause.
