By The Book with David S. Daniels 1 was surprised to read in the latest issue of First Things #bout a group of pro-life and pro-choice individuals who have teamed up to-explore ways of working together on the abortion issue. Appropriately named Common Ground, this group works to find mutually acceptable ways of assisting women facing crisis pregnancies. Not only is Common Ground concerned with matters related to pregnancy itself, they also strive to lower the level of public invective so prevalent in the abortion debate. And whatever one's view of abortion, the damage caused by ugly words hurled at one another is a regrettable reality. I was surprised to learn of the existence of Common Ground because I colild not understand how such mutually-exclusive views managed to come together. It appears, progress has been made in Common Ground because pro-choice members have agreed to stop calling pro-lifers "terrorists," and pro-life members no longer call pro-choicers "baby killers". But wait a minute. Something is wrong here. As John Neuhaus, Editor- in-Chief of First Things, notes, "The pro-life people participating in Common Ground are not and never were terrorists, while, as a matter of simple fact, the pro-choice people do kill or support the killing of babies." The whole premise of the pro-life movement is that abortion is wrong because it kills unborn babies. While we applaud every attempt to bring sanity to the public debate over abortion, it is simply relinquishing-too much to say that pro-lifers will no logger describe abortion in terms of what it actually. does, rob an unborn infant of its developing life. As Neuhpus goes on to say, "Common Ground is purchased at too high a price if it requires the denial of what the dispute is about in the first place." Furthermore, it is ludicrous to believe that (OVER 6000 SQ.FT, of SHOWROON' Furniture, Appliances, TV, VCR and more! something significant has occurred when pro-choice people agree to cease calling pro-lifers "terrorists," something pro- lifers never were in the first place. 1 am concerned about the ugly mood so evident in * public debates over moral issues. Standing for moral truth is not optional for those professing to be followers of Jesus Christ. Christians are called to be "salt and light" ip a morally decaying culture. But in standing for moral truth, Christians must watch their attitudes, for Cops seek Crimestoppers and Durham Regional Police are asking for the publics help in solving a Break and Enter that occurred in Scugog between May 12th and 13th of this year. Sometime during the evening/early morning hours "Tic Toc Restaurant" located at 21900 Highway #12 was forcibly entered. Entry was gained «by removing a window from the business premises. Once, inside, the culprits stole a quantity of property which included cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes. Crimestoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1000.00 for any information as the Scriptures" say, "..man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires" (James 1:20 NIV). When it comes to the abortion problem, there can be no truce which denies the reality of what abortion is all about. Clear thinking 'pro-lifers can yield no ground to the view 3 "hat an unborn baby is not' a person worthy of protection at every stage of his or her development. However, the pro-life stand must be held without hurling ugly words at those who disagree. Tic Toc tips that leads to an arrest in this -incident or any other serious offence. Callers never have to give their name or testify in court. Crime prevention is a community concern. If you have any knowledge regarding this crime, give Durham Regional Crimestoppers a call.
