12 -- Se Citizen ~ FARM & RURAL Livestock need protection | as rabies strain heads north By Dr. Dan Stevenson, O.MAF.RA. The arctic fox strain of rabies has been present in Ontario for sometime and is most often found in foxes and skunks. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) program to vaccinate Wildlife has significantly reduced the numbenr of rabies eases in Ontario. Raccoon rabies is a new dirain that has been moving. nonthward in the eastern USA for sometime and is now very close to Ontario. We are especially concerned about raccoon rabies because Ontario has very large numbers of raccoons and many of them live close to and in urban areas. Reports from states, that already have raccoon rabies, indigate that many more do tic animals and people are being exposed to this strain than with fox rabies. All strains ofarabies virus in North America are very similar. The main difference is in the primary host involved in maintaining and spreading the infection. Raccoons are the. primary host for raccoon rabies. As of May 1, no cases of raccoon' rabies have been reported in Ontario. Fox rabies can cause rabies in a raccoon but "raccoon strain rabies" -has not beep seen in Ontario. % i Raccoon rabiep'is present Pickse wk alfalfa # BEST for intake # The choice of o¥ po | booki® > discounts until July 31! Reports from areas in the USA, that already have raccoon rabies, indicate many more cats, dogs and people are being exposed to this new strain'of rabies. Vaccinating your animals on the farm means less risk to your family and visitors, and animals. It is good practice to vaccinate all animals that have regular and close contact with humans. The life styles .of cats and raggoons are very similar and their paths frequently cross. Many raccoons have dens in barns. Barn cats will be a significant risk on your farm should raccoon . rabies become established in Onta arn cats are difficult i Seed they tend Where did all the hay go? After several years of relatively perfect winter survival, the alfalfa crop has taken a beating during the winter of '96. Fields should be inspected for plant counts to indicate whether the stand is sufficient to provide the _ crop desired for this year. The crop should be uing the following guidelines. If there are six or more alfalfa plants per square foot, this is considered a to your: to agrive from unknown sources and are hot terribly social; yet their isk to family, visitors and other farm animals cannot be ignored. It is important to monitor and control farm cat umbers and to vaccinate them all. Talk to your veterinarian . about practical ways , 'of vaccinating this special risk group. Many farmers have theif" cattle vaccinated on a regular schedule and it is good insurance." The vaccine against fox rabies is the same vaccine that will be used should raccoon rabies enter Ontario. Talk to your veterinarian about the recommendations and options for vaccinating and proteoting your herd. Contact Agriculture Canada (905-623-5759) if you see any animal you suspect may have rabies. in an emergency situation, contact the police. three to five plants per square foot it is considered to be half a stand, and if there is less than three plants per square foot, it shouldbe scheduled for replanting. Options for replanting require that alfalfa plants be dead for several weeks before trying to establish a new alfalfa stand. Fields can be sprayed with Roundup three days before harvest to begin preparation for the new i ih Hundreds of people enjoyed the first Blossom Festival held over the weekend at Farm Winery. Seeding during ni first week in August is possible with well drained soils apd good rtility levels providiffig the best 'response. August seedings have been fairly successful when done during that first week which allows the alfalfa time to establish a good healthy root system to gointo the winter. However, a winter like we've just come through would be very hard on new. seedings again. The other in the spring of '97, cithor direct seeded or underseeded. If your hay fields are not' going to provide enough feed to meet your requirements, then you may want to consider planting a supplementary crop, for example, corn silage, to meet your feeding requirements: For information on new varieties of forage crops, the Forage Crop Variety Performance Brochure is (4769) full stand.
