FARM & RURAL Australian visitor joins 'Durham East 4H Beef 2 by Heather woke It was a year ggo when Anna Richards filled out an application for the Rotary Internatibral Youth Exchange program. Then 16, and living near Cobram, a town of 4500 situated on the border', separating New South Wales and Victoria in Australia, she chose to visit Canada. we One of the rehsons she chose our country was because of the beef industry. Anna learned last summer she'd be coming to Ontario. Since early January she's been a guest of the Port Perry Rotary Club. For the first three months Anna stayed with Rotarian Jerry Hopkins, and his family. Since the end of April she's been a part of the McCrae family. : Befor coming to Canada Anna was, and- still is, strongly involved in the beef industry. When not in school, Anna helped her parents operate an embryo transfer centre, working with commepgial "eattle and a herd of over 40 Gelbviehs. While this breed is popular in Australia, it is only now becoming so in Canada. There's only a" 'small handful of these breeders in Township. Anna's father is a veterinarian specializing.in embryo transfer and artificial breeding. This involves flushing fertilized embryos out of a doner cow, then implanting them into recipient heifers. Pow 17, Anna 'Aready has er own Gelbvieh herd, which she started 3 years the 1994 Grand Champion \Gelbvieh bull at the Melbourne Royal and.the Reserve Junior Champion Gelbyvieh bull at the Sys Royal. At the 1995 South Eastern National, her heifer way 'named the Boarder Mail Junior Champion Heifer. Anna also won the Hoechst Animal Health Most A lished Junior ago when Dr. David Richards gave his daugh a fertilized embryo. When a baby bull was born, Anna sold the animal and, from these proceeds, bought her first heifer. Currently she owns two full-blood Gelbvieh heifers, 8 angus/gelbvieh heifers and some Angus, as well, all under the herd name "Deerfoot Gelbvigh Stud". Anna chose this name because the first time her father came to Canada to buy 100 Gelbvieh embryos, he travelled on the Deerfoot Trail in Alberta. "Cattle have, been my interest and through these interests I'd heard about the ycattle industry in Canada" Anna told the Citjzen. Annazhas been heavily involved in ' showing animals, » Having worked as a stud "groom. for International Cattle Breeders and Gunvar Scugog, Gelbvieh Studs and a number of others, she led qri-Quip ¢r Fencing Systems IF YOU'RE NOT LOOKING AT US YOU'RE MISSING A GREAT DEAL! Last year she won the Victorian Angus Judging Competition in the "under 30" category and came sixth in the National Finals where competitors from all over the continent compete. Unfortunately, there aren't 4H programs in Australia. Anna was thrilled when given the opportunity of joining the Durham East 4H Beef Club. | Having already attended 2 meetings, she has her 4H project picked out; a 16- month old heifer which Dave Dalzell of Cumcatch Farms in Leskard, near Orono, is lending her. Mr. Dalzell -is vice- president of the Eastern Cangda Gelbvieh Association and-has been in the \Gelbvieh business almost 5 years. ~ Anna already how several members of the 4H club as many are in her classes at SY She'll be showing her heifer at the 'club's Achievement Day at Blackstock Fair and is hoping to.show at the Royal, Durham farmers invited to Durham West 'and East Soil aiid Crop Improvement Associations are hosting a "Hay Day", Tuesday, June 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p-m., at the farm of Neal Grandy in Brooklin, corner of Winchester Road and Thornton Road.
