Scugog Citizen -- Snowbirds dream trip Though it's still early July, most people at the Community Nursing Home are thinking March. That's March of '92, and some time during that month "The Dream Trip" will become a' reali- ty. A group of nursing home resi- dents accompanied by staff and volunteers will board a specially equipped coach bus and head south for a week's holiday in the Florida sun. Doing this kind of thing is almost un-heard of in nursing home circles, but that doesn't bother Kim Mitchell. She's the energetic and un-flappable activi- ties director at CNH in Port Perry and has taken on the large job of organizing and co-ordinating this rip to the sunshine state. In a recent interview with the Citizen, she said the idea behind the trip is simple enough. "We want to raise the expecta- tions of the residents of what is possible, what they can do. This trip gives the residents a goal and a dream. Some of the residents still don't think they are capable of doing this, but we (staff and volunteers) are going to show them that they can." Kim said that while many details are still to be worked out, the "game plan" calls for at least three days to get there (stops along the way every three hours or 50) then five days in Florida and another three to get home, perhaps Getting fleeced Doug Larmer had his hands full -- of fleece -- during Pioneer Days at Scugog Shores Museum. The weatherman cooperated both Saturday and Sunday, and the crowds 'flocked' to get a 'taste of good-old fashioned fun. A terrific success! A_great deal of preparation must go Into such a trip anid this Is already well underway (see story). In photo above, from left front is: Margaret Charland, Walt Leiter and Reg Seager from the Residents' Council; and at back, volunteers Rita Glasgow, Margret €avill, Hazel Zolle(, and Hilda Draband. with a stop in Nashville. While in Florida, the itinerary calls for a trip to Disneyworld, a cruise on the "Ship of Romance," the Arabian Nights Dinner Theatre in. Orlando and plenty of time for sight-seeing, shopping and relax- ing by the pool They will travel in a specially equipped coach with lift for wheel chairs, extra large washrooms and a fridge for medicauons Kim admits that aking at least 15 nursing home residents on an cight-day trip to Florida is "a bit scary. Bui we (staff and volun- teers) will be taking every precau- * tion for their safety and health." Overnight trips are nothing new for CNH residents. They have been taking them for the last five years 10 places like Niagara Falls, Toronto and Kingston..So the staff and volunteers know what to expect. : ' And Kim said, other rursing homes are going to watch the Flonda np very carefully to see if they can do the same thing for their residents. Of course this Florida trip has the complete support of CNH administrator Edna Goss who thinks 11s marvellous,.not to men- ton a challenge. For those residents who actial- ly make the trip, it wil! cost some out*of-pocket money. But the nursing home is now in the pro-' cess of raising funds through a variety of events like a rummage sale in June and a talent auction planned for September. "Support from the community has been just fantastic," Kim said. The total cost for the trip won't be known until all the details are finalized. . . Kim said she's not sire who first came up ~uta .his idea. But staff started discussing it and eventually somebody just said "why not give it a try." For some of the elderly resi- dents it will be their first trip ever outside Canada. As for the six staff and volunteers who will be present, Kim agrees it won't be a vacation for them. "We are going to be working from early morning ul midnight." But for all invalved, it truly'is a "Dream Trip."
