Elfin, Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 16, 1991-27 4a "Tdidn't actually SEE the ghosts" Ink Spots by Helen Si1Zanne WHO YOU GONNA CALL? Remember the article in the Scugog Citizen (July 3) called "The Haunting?" Remember Niki Bainbridge mentioning how she had to have a friend un-lock her bedroom because the ghosts had locked in? Guess who the friend was? Right! 1 don't usually get phone calts at 6:30 in the morning so I won- dered who in the world could be calling at the ungodly' hour? . 1 was startled when'l picked up the phone and Niki. was on the other end, asking if I was busy. "No, Niki: I just got in from my hang-gliding lesson and broke a fingernail on take-off which has put me in a bit of a foul mood. Can | help you with something?" Niki explained her predicament and I was over to the Murray House in minutes, using the skel- ton key she had given me for emergencies. Now that I look back 0 on it, there was a strange feeling when I entered the restaurant, as if; some- one was watching me. A Someone was! It was the paint- ing of one of th hosts. Her eyes were following me. 1 wanted to poke them out, but wasn't comfortable with the idea' "of dabbling in the super-natural. Niki, she wasn't smiling and they were not friendly eyes, 1 made it to the second floor , without incident, but climbing thoge tiny stairs to the loft was spooky. Each time | made it to the top I was thrown down to the bottom. Sure, maybe the first time, I could have tripped on my shoelaces. And: the second time, I think a black cat ran in front of me, send- ing me tumbling down head over heels. Please tell me you have a black cat, Niki! I'll bet that lady in the painting saw it all= I'll bet that lady even had a ghost of a smile. I was getting just a little upset. Being thrown down a Why, I'd even go over Niagara Falls in a barrel at mid-night, sil- houetted by. a full moon singing "Phantom of the Opera." Or race up the CN Tower backwards on my kriees again, holding two light- ed candles. But I don't think J can bring myself to wrestle with someone had just gotten up. Was apparitions I can't even see. It makes mg look foolish, Niki! "This has haunted me for ages, but you mention waking up and feeling a presence on your bed, with the blankets settling as. if ita man ghost? And, next time you look out- side, look 'up at your bedroom 'window. See the rope ladder dan- gling down to the ground? Locked in again, Niki? Use the ladder!!! Travelling with books from Scugog Library * The journey begins with an three times in a row indicates to me that I should vanish. I mean, I :- can take a hint as well as anyone else. You don't want me, I'll go, but first, I'm going to uh-lock the door. : 1 was a wee bit hesitant in call- ing 911 and telling them that some ghosts had just thrown me down "the stairs, and my friend was being held captive in the loft. So, I crawled up those stairs again, clutching each stair as I made my way up. Strange how the door opened without a problem. I wonder if it was because I grabbed some garlic when 1 was in the kitchen and strung it around my neck. , . I'didn't actually see the ghosts. 1 could be dead wrong, but I'm sure they are really friendly. I'm not taking it personally that they chose to throw me through the air like a rag doll. Maybe it's a fun thing they do to while away the hours. I'don't mind telling you, 'how-. ever, much as I' 'm a good spot, [ Ny in the spirit for games at t hour and it was beginning to test my sense of humour a whole bunch. Besides, I hadn't éven had my morning coffee. « I will do anytHing for a frierid. Si it. goes no fur- ther than that vision of a place not known from experience. The trav- eller, different-from the tourist, has a longing' to experience, taste, smell and wonder. Taking the good with the bad is part of the lure. Now, the Amazon is riot on the list for most travellers, let alone tourists, but Redmond O'Hanlon had a vision and the dream became reality. He spent four months in Venezuela travelling up .the Orinoco River, avoiding snakes and searching for birds. "In Trouble Again" is his record of this adventure. "Paddle to the Amazon" is the journal of another adventurer, Don Starkje and his sons, who / travel by 'canoe from Winnipeg, down: the, Réd River, the Mississipi, the Gulf of Mexico to the Orinico River. *-* . There are several new travel books at the Memorial 'Library, including "Best Nightmare on Earth, a Life in Haiti," by Herbert Gold and "Cathay, A Journey in Search of Old China," by Fergus M. Bordewich. The first is an extraordinary memory of almost 40 years in Haiti, through the terrorism and corruption 'of the Duvalier Smile € ., 'Roy; !! Surrounded by such mis- ery, the author never ceased to marvel at the rugged beauty of the country 'or the bravery of the Haitian peasants. - Never go back to view a mem- sory, so it is said. The memory of + sunshine dnd warmth seems tar- nished and even foreign. 'In the book, "Cathay," Bordewich journeyed 10 China yearning for the Cathay of Marco Polo and the philosophy of "seren- ity, beauty and balance." Little of that Cathay Fingers. bit the authopfound that many Chinese, were also longing for a revival of those nobler times. And that, he says, offers a ray of that long-ago light. Other new titles at thé Library for arm-chair travellers include: "Wall to Wall, From Beijing fo Berlin by Rail." Or "The Lonely Planet Guide to Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands." Closer to home, you might enjoy "Ottdoor Travellers Guide to Canada, Where the Whales Are, Your Guide to Whale Watching in North®America" and Milepost, an excellent guide to the Yukon and Alaska. ° . The term "Cook's Tour," is part of our vodabulary as the result of one man. Thomas Cook, 150 years of popular tourism, by Piers ' Brendon, recounts the first "tour"in 1841 when the passion- ate, temperdnce worker, Thomas Cook, organized a rally excursion 14 miles from his home. And he never looked back. It was oh to Alpine glaciers, the deserts of Palestine and around the world. Even if the journey remains just a vision, thre are others wha offer to share 'their adventures and experiences, gladly. Sharing thé dream, enticing us to make the world a litle more familiar.
