wo 10 Scugog Citlaen --Tuesday, August 37, TOT -Hardball diamond issue stirs it up at council Members of Township council have reacted angrily to allegations "it purposely refused to support a grant application to help build a new hardball diamond on the Port Perry Fairgrounds. "We (council) have no idea who is forming a hardball league, how many kids are going to play (hardball) or who will maintain the diamond," fumed Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce Monday after- ' noon. She was directing her anger at Taxpayers Coalition rep Colin Kemp who attended the mekting to ask why council refused to sup- port the grant for the diamond at the Fair 5 "What the Fair Board brought to council did not meet the (Wintario) grant requirements. The Fair Board has not demon- strated there is a need for a hard- ball diamond," she went on. "To | say that you can just run out and get a Wintario grant these days is a great. mis-conception. It took thrée years to get (a grant) for a new soccer clubhouse and to repair the arena roof," she said. Although no members of the Fair Board were present at Monday's meeting, there have been letters to editor from the «Board recently which were critical of the lack of support from coun- cil. He admitted he didn't know whether there. is a need for a hard- ball diamond at the Fairgrounds, but said his concern gtems from the fact that grants might be avail- able for rec facilities rather than municipal tax dollars. But that didn't satisfy council 'lor Pearce, or area councillor Don Cochrane. "A number of years ago, there was a (hardball) diamond at the Fairgrounds. We were chased away because horses, livesiock and baseball don't mix," he said. The diamond at the grounds now under construction using Fair Board and service club money is on the race-track infield. Councillor Pearce said the con- troversy has created confusion among the public as to whether there will be hardball in the com- munity next season. Port Perry Minor Softball is not taking registrations for hardball in the spring, she said. Blackstock Minor Softball will be canvassing its members to determine how many want to switch to hardBall next season. Meanwhile, council hopes to speed up construction of three new softball diamonds on- land owned ° by Scugog north of the Arena. Council will bridge finance the cost of grading the lands this fall for spring seeding. Minor Softball has agreed to pay some of the costs ($30,000 over three years) and ihe Township hopes that provincial grants will cover the rest. Van Camp Contracting was the low bidder at $68,000 for the grading and levelling of the three diamonds. Even if the area is seeded next year, it will be the fol- lowing year before the diamonds are ready for play. 'Homer' the pigeon is back home again "Homer" the pigeon is back home, finally. Citizen readers may recall the saga of the pigeon who "dropped in" one morning late in July at the Russell home in Prince Albert, , and refused to leave. Bands on his legs identified him as #14534, CU90 and the Russell family called him "Homer." It was believed that Homer was in a race when he stopped in PVC Paul Van Camp " CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT 204 Casimir Street, PORT PERRY Ontario L9L 1B7 (416) 985-9725 Ivory Forest Homes Inc. Prince Albert. And that proved to be correct. Homer had been set loose in Hearst, Ontario, for a 500 mile flight to Cobourg, where his owner John Fox lives. This was Homer's fourth race thifseason and Mr. Fox said he is a good racer, despite the fact he made the prolonged stop-over in Scugog.
