\ | 5 Twice unlucky for Malcolm Ward 4 rep Glenn Malcolm struck out on two attempts to get resolutions passed at Monday's council meeting. Councillor Malcolm, who is running in the November election motion calling for the in-coming council to freeze councillors salaries at chrrent"levels for the next three years. Without a seconder, the motion died before it could be discussed. He had 'a little more success Yo able to get a seconder for a against Mayor Howard Hall, was with a second motion, It at least A Gimme boiled cabbage! 1 nk i Sic ming gpots enough salt to put a 's blood pressure into frightening numbers, Dy Helen S1Zinne and loads of pepper that a person in the next room would have a sneez- ing fit! Fruit! Any kind of fruit I can get my hands on. In fact, it's such a frantic need, I almost devour it before I can get the skin off. I wash it down with a large can of juice. Two, if there's another one* handy. Peanuts! Not just any peanuts. An insatiable desire for dry-roasted peanuts! Preferably first thing in the morning; but, only after I have inhaled a large bag of ketchup-flavoured potato chips. Itchy feet! An overwhelming urge to kick my shoes off wherever 1 am, and scratch my feet until hey bleed. Running over hot coals is not out of the question. Scary mood swings! One minute the world is my oyster, the next, it's the pits! I hate it and everyone and everything in it. I am not in a stable mood, and wouldn't you just know it, a fly has entered my home, I race for the swatter, laughing hysterically! The fly will die! 1 STREP 00 it. | mise) | break ug heart endo: fatigue! If 1 were anymore tired, I'd be dead. As it is, I go out shopping in the moming, two blocks away, and I have to crawl into the back seat of my car for a short nap before I hit the stores. When I am walking, I carry a blanket with me to grab a few winks on a park bench, or in a pinch, the ground will do. You all think I'm pregnant, don't you! At my age, Mother Nature would not be so cruel as to play that kind of a joke on me. Mother Nature also knows I would not share in her humour, Maybe you think I have some strange medical disease. No! Just had my yearly check-up and my doctor has assured me I have once again made it through another year in good health! Truth be known, I HAVE QUIT SMOKING! By the time you read this, it will be a couple of months. I understand for those of you who have never smoked, the withd | from nicoti that I have just described will be completely "foreign. For those who have smoked and quit, somehow I think you will relate. Do I miss it? Yes, yes, yes! Will I go back to it? NEVER AGAIN!!! When I die, 1 want it to be from something beyond my control. Besides, if I started smoking again, I'd eventually want to quit, and, quite honestly, just how much boiled cabbage can a human being endure! got on the table for the discussion, but in the end, it too went down to defeat by a 5-2 margin. (area "councillor Don Cochrane voted * along with Malcolm in favour) This motion called on Scugog to ask Durham Region to come up with a policy in which water and * sewer costs are covered complete- ly by user fees. That's usually the case, but this year, 1.4 per cent (or $1.3 million) of the water and sewer budget comes from general operating funds. "It's only fair that Durham protect (those) on private (well and septic) services who pay their entire costs," he said. Regional rep Yvonne Christie daid the Region tries to cover water and sewer costs from user fees, but it's not always possible, and this is one of those years. When both motions went down to defeat, councillor Malcolm said they were resolutions put forward by the Taxpayers Coalition. "I felt they were fesolutions that 1 could support," he told the meeting. Coalition rep Colin Kemp, who was present at Monday's meeting taking notes, said the Coalition plans to make these an election issue. The politicking at City Hall is starting to get ik enough to shovel. Sandra's's surprise Sandra Hollidgy (centre) was wished a "Happy 25th Birthday" on August 23 by her co-workers at Central Seven In Port Perry. That doesn't sound so Kilometre of coins By Gwenyth Thompson It'is difficult to visualize just how many a 'million' is. How can we think of it? To collect a million pennies in a year, we would have to collect neafly 20,000 pennies or $200 a week. AWESOME! But let's look at it another way. If a thousand people each gave a thousand pennies, or $10, we would have a million pennies or $10,000 for Community Memorial tape' on the streets of Port Pefry between 10 am. and 5 p.m., ready for your pennies (and loonies!) to be 'stuck'. The auxiliarysuses- all the money to purchase new and replacement equipment in the hos- pital, The hospital's new addition will need many new- things. We ask for your help on our kilometre of pennies and in the containers in stores. Here's how they stand: Port Perry 18,143 pen- Fre : Watch for it. p How many people do we have in Scugog Township? To give the project a boost, on Friday, Sept. 13 (Sept. 14, if it rains), faithful volunteers from the Hospital Avsiliary will be nies; Cartwright 7,522 pennies; Scugog Island 6,000 pennies; Seagrave 3,111 pennies; Prince Albert 2,515 pennies; Greenbank 1,435.
