DRI 6 Rw In the : pL 'CITIZEN ' is done with as little as wiping it with a clean, damp sponge or with an occasional cleaning with a mild scouring cleanser. The grout between the tiles is what requires a little work. Most grouts will show stains and darken over time. Sealing the grout will help.resist stains. The use of a smooth white grout that can be bleached will also help. Laminate. This is one of the least expensive, sur- faces. Plastic laminates such as those made by Wilsonart and Formica, are not only easy to change if you tire of the colour or design, but are ¢asy to clean as well. Most spills can be wiped away With a mild deter- gent and cloth, but do not use scrub pads or abrasive cleaners on it gg the surface is relatively soft and will scratch easily. Also, the colour is applied to the top layer.only and if scratched, the backing will show through. Minor nicks and scratches can be repaired with a filler available in most laminate colours from your local supplier. Laminates will burn, so hot pots and pans must never be placed on them. A laminate with the colour right Wicugh it is-avail- able from most manufacturers. With this product, minor cuts and scratches will not show as readily. « Solid surfaces. These synthetic surfdees such as "Corian" and "Surrell" are made from polyester or acrylic and are available in several different finishes' from matte to high gloss. Each requires different care to remove the stubborn spots and stains, General cleaning is with soapy water and soft cloth. Since it is non-porous, mildew and germs don't have a chance, and that makes it great for bathrooms. While it will burn and scratch, those marks can 'be removed with fine sandpaper or an abrasive scrub pad (depend- ing on the exact kind of surface finish) = Natural marble. Marble looks great but is not very practical for the active family. Most colours are very porous and will soak up spills and stains instantly, so be careful about what you set on the counter. Stains will eventually dry out but"atids from coffee or lemon juice will score the finish and it will have to be replaced. It's best to use marble in baths or low traffic areas and not on countertops or kitchen floors. Granite. This is also a natural stone but is much denser than marble. Darker colours are more stain resistant and under normal circumstances, granite is a nearly indestructible surface. It is hard to scratch and will not bum, Cleaning can | be done with soap and a soft cloth. The only. problem is | getting granite into your house. It is only available in certain lengths and widths and is fabricated off-site. Te---- Q
