2 Friday, July 15, 2022 brooklintowncrier.com Will we one day see Matthew Mountjoy broadcasting sports events on TV? It's entirely possible as this 18-year old Brooklin High graduate has already set his sights on that very goal. Mountjoy won the Brooklin Town Crier Award at the June 29 BHS graduation ceremony. The newspaper donates $400 each year to a graduating student attending a post-secondary program in English/Media/Communication technology. Mountjoy will attend Durham College in the fall to pursue a diploma in journalism. But the bigger picture for him is in sports, particularly as a broadcaster or analyst. By his own admission an inveterate sports watcher, he's begun to lay out that path by contributing to the online site "lastwordonsports.com." "I've been writing for them for the last two months," Mountjoy says. "And I get paid for it so it's a little money on the side. It's really part of a rumours in sports type of department." While in high school, he'd taken every communications technology course available. These prepared him to handle photo and video editing tasks, which he admits he revelled in. In the second year of the program, students need to obtain placements in their field. "I'm hoping that I can get a placement that will land me a position in my field." Mountjoy adds he may get involved with the college publication "The Chronicle" as well as perhaps doing some film work for the school. While his first love is hockey, he also recognizes to need to cover all sorts of sports in order to best achieve his objectives. And some day…who knows?
