Driftwood Theatre Group has announced plans to return to the road with The Bard's Bus Tour. The tour is the first for the group since 2019, as the 2020 and 2021 tours were cancelled because of the pandemic. "By the time we hit the road in July it will have been three years since we were last face-to-face with people across Ontario. I can't wait to share this epic story and the work of these extraordinary artists with our audiences," said D. Jeremy Smith, the founding artistic director of Driftwood and one of the performers. The group will tour from July 14 to Aug. 21, performing 'King Henry Five'. It's an adaptation of three Shakespeare plays -- Henry IV parts 1 and 2 and 'Henry V'. 'King Henry V' is a story about community, the families people inherit and those they choose, and the legacies left behind. The play is set against the backdrop of a contemporary patio bar and features a blend of music, puppetry and Shakespearean poetry. In addition to Smith, other cast members include Canadian theatre veteran Hume Baugh as Falstaff, Richard Alan Campbell as Quickly/Henry IV, Ximena Huizi as Poins/Hotspur, Rosalie Tremblay as Catherine/ Bardolph and Ben Yoganathan as Hal/Henry V. The production was designed by Julia Kim and will feature seven original songs with lyrics by Germaine Konji, the 2020 Musical Stage Company Banks Prize winner. Tickets for 'King Henry V' are now on sale online at driftwoodtheatre.com. The theatre group has a vision of theatre for all people, so tickets are available for 'Pay What You Can Afford' admission. Audiences are invited to select from four one of four set admission prices -- $5, $35, $50 or $75, whichever best fits their circumstances. Driftwood has been doing The Bard's Bus Tour since 1995, performing for more than 100,000 people across the province. It has performed in city parks, campus fields, schools, heritage museums, castles, private estates and a parking lot. Through its Beyond the Bard Play Development program, Driftwood has supported the development of more than 100 short and full-length plays by emerging Canadian playwrights since 2004. Last year, the group offered up Driftwood Digital after the bus tour was cancelled. A preview is set for July 19 in Bowmanville at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington. Opening night is July 21 at Parkwood Estate in Oshawa. Other shows in Durham are Aug. 2 at Whitby Celebration Square, Aug. 3 at Esplanade Park in Pickering and Aug. 14 at the Scugog Shores Museum in Port Perry. Other shows include one in Bobcaygeon at the Kawartha Settlers Village on Aug. 5, on Aug. 6 at the Peterborough Museum and Archives and Aug. 7 at Victoria Park in Cobourg.
