The vietim was near-sighted and | partially deaf. The driver, Ray ' Conklin, Brockville, stopped the | truck in three feet after approach- ing the crossing cautiously and giv- | ing the usual warning, Mr. Whitte- | more was unmarried, and is surviv- ed hy one sister, Mrs, C, Day Clark, Toronto, DESTROYED BY FIRE For the third time this season, Cornwall section suffered the loss of a cheese Jfactory when Charles Hutt's factory at Glen Falloch near Cornwall, was burned to the ground Sunday night from a fire of un- known origin. The factory -was an up-to-date one, equipped only Just | winter with a separating and p..s- teurizing plant at a cost of over $2, 000. This is a total loss, as well as about forty boxes of cheese. Mr. and Mrs. Hutt and their five chil- | dren resided in an apartment over the factory. They were absent at the time of the fire. They lost all their household effects, the loss is quite heavy with insurance that will by no means cover it. VETERAN KILLED i When falling rain and the lights of an approaching auto partially ob- scured the vision of Thomas John- ston, chauffeur for a Pembroke taxi firm, Friday evening, his car crash- ed into a pedestrian, Joseph Pug, on the paved highway, some two and a half miles east of Pembroke about eleven o'clock, and caused injuries | to Pugh from which he died in the Cottage Hospital some two hours | later. Pugh, who was a veteran of the Great War, and about 50 years | of age, was walking along the high- | way returning to the headquarters | of the road comstruction camp of | McDonald and Mcleod, where the | accident happened. CENTENARIAN PASSES AWAY Robert Baverstock passed away al his home at Salmon Point, Picton in his 100th year. Mr. Baverstock was perhaps the oldest resident of the county, where he has lived all his life on the Lake Shore at his late residence. He was active and helped his soms with fishing until recently. Only last fall he accom- panied members of his family on a motor trip, and enjoyed the trip as well as any member of the party. He had lived during the reign of four sovereigms. In his early days he was employed clearing the woods from what today are the most Pros- perous farms in the county. | CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY John Fair yesterday celebrated his 100th birthday in the large | county Refuge Home of Hastings. | on the Kingston Road at the east end of Belleville. He is a mative of | Marmora, where he was born July | 24, 1827. He has been an inmate of the Home since March 13, 1917. His wife had come with him, but she died im the year 1920, John Fair has a family scattered over the continent, and just recently from Oregon came a letter from a 70- year-old daughter offering him con- gratulations on attaining his 100th | birthday, and remarking that she. was still able to work. Fair is an ideal inmate, and never misses a | meal, according to Superintendent | Leigh. He enjoys good health but on account of his great age, there was mo public celebration of the event. He was a son of Johm Fair and his wife Elizabeth Morgan. Fair rises at six o'clock every morning and takes his place at the breakfast table at 7 o'clock with the rest of the inmates.
